Hey there! Question: I am trying to decide between cal and ucla, two really good schools. I plan on doing premed/biology and/or business. I got a ton of financial aid from ucla i.e. full ride all four years because of a scholarship. I'm stuck deciding because (1) the money issue -- ucla gives me more than cal and (2) well cal is the more prestigious school and if I go to ucla, I might regret not going to cal. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Go to UCLA for financial reasons.
If you do decide to go into business, be aware that UCLA does not have a pure business major, but you can go into business without a major in business.
Visit both campuses and see which one you like better (often gut instinct is a good indicator of where you will enjoy going)

thanks zjodak for your thoughts! :)

to everyone: just wondering, any other suggestions?

Graduating from college debt-free is much more worth it than whatever minor additional prestige is perceived to be obtained from attending Cal.

UCLA and Cal have its strengths in certain areas.

For most pure science majors like bio, physics, math, engineering, psychology as a social science, political science, majors that do well on the LSAT, business- Cal is stronger.

For pre-med/health, any discipline in the health sciences, psychology as a medical discipline (psychobiology), neuropsychology, theater, film, performing arts, music- UCLA is stronger

Our family friend told me this. In fact, he works at UC Berkeley.

Berkeley is slightly more prestigious but you can not go wrong with these two great schools.

collegestar123- what is your ultimate goal? To land a career in business, to land a career in the health sciences, become a researcher in medicine or become a scientific researcher?

I have the same confusion. Should I go Berkeley-Bio (Bio is pre-med, right?) or UCLA? UCB is closer, 50 mins on BART. Will I regret if I am not part of the Berkeley network connection?

xxcollegesxx-if you are doing bio as pre-med then I would suggest UCLA, UCSD, UCD or UCI. If you are doing bio for research to get a Phd, then Cal.

You are wondering whether to go to an excellent school that will give you a full ride, or to another excellent school that does not?

Really?

Unless money is not an issue (hard to believe UCLA gives full rides to those flush with money) it should be so easy to decide, because these schools are comparable.
Congratulations on such wonderful options.

which one is good for both pre-med and PhD research? I see one issue is for a high school student, we are not definitely sure our path. I also see one point is we are looking for “connection” and “network” after college graduation.

thanks for the replies!

@Pinoiako916: i’m looking to do pre-med, but you know that a lot of people change what they want to do when they are in college. so in case that happens to me, i want to go somewhere that will give me the chance to do well in other areas as well. if i don’t do premed, i’m kinda leaning towards comp sci and business, so i guess cal would be better for that…maybe??? haha it’s exactly this that makes deciding tough.

You can do pre-med courses alongside any major.

Cal is more world renowned and nationally renowned. UCLA is prestigious too.

Go with what you think is best for you. It looks like your leaning towards Berkeley, despite the money.
