do Cal and UCLA take into consideration the amount of units one takes each semester? For example, would someone applying to College of L&S with a 4.0GPA and took 3 classes each semester still look more competitive than someone who has a 3.7 who took 6-10 classes each semester? (i'm guessing that may be where PS and EC's come into play, but sort of curious what other opinions are on this)

Yes the 4.0 would probably look more competitive. But, if you are borderline, the unit load probably would help. But many people are able to get 4.0s taking that many units. (I took 22 semester units one semester and got a 4.0 and 20 another and got a 4.0). Not saying yours isn’t a great accomplishment, but a 4.0 definitely does speak for itself and will be viewed better than a lesser GPA in most circumstances.

Transfer students, for Better or worse are viewed considerably more based on numbers rather than wholistically. Now that is starting to change so we shall see. What’s your major? And major GPA?

catfoodjar - yeah, well I know that Cal and La have been using the comprehensive review process for a while, just not sure how or if unit load is considered in that. my major is Development Studies (College of L&S) with a ~3.68GPA, i’ve worked full-time each semester except for last semester when i took 40 units.

Lol, you took 40 units.

yeah, 12 courses between 4 different schools

That’s really impressive. If you showed then that clearly on your app, you should be good to go. Good job. I hope your hard work gets rewarded!

i could only manage 3 or 4 courses per semester, usually 3. im not even working. im kinda slow learner; i need to put some time to understand stuffs.
last spring i had 3 major courses with two labs(chem and physics) plus one GE, and i literally studied everyday from the beginning of the semester to the end. chem lab killed my time since it was 5 hours a week and physics lab reports were annoying.
i wonder how students who take like 20units study. i mean i dont think they would have time to even read textbooks.

thanks catfoodjar - much luck to you too if you’re still waiting on the school of your choice…

password - well i had to sacrifice a bit of my social life to do so…and pretty much replaced my whole diet with coffee and redbulls (jk sort of). i figured that i should get used to it if i expect to transfer to a school like Cal. but eitherway, don’t do what i did unless youre seriously willing to adopt an OCD mentality, which is neither healthy or smart. and honestly i think its better to take 3 or 4 classes anyway if youre taking difficult courses like chem or physics…
