CAL - Out Of State

What's the trick to getting into Cal as an out of state transfer student?

get a 4.0, do a lot of EC’s, don’t sleep, always pull an all-nighter, write a dramatic sob story…

do you really think there are “tricks”? #areyouseriousbro

UC transfer admission focuses on grades, completion of your general education and major prerequisite requirements and demonstrated interest in your field of study. For OOS, completing the GE and major prereqs may be challenging.

Transfer admission is selective by major or division so your chosen field of study will affect your chance of admission.

For general information about GE and major prereqs, and admit rates by college/division, see http://students.berkeley.edu/files/Admissions/12626_5.Info_TransAdm.pdf

how about transferring to a community college in CA first?

Doesn’t it seem like kind of a downgrade to transfer from a top 75 university to a california community college?

Lots of students do “reverse transfers” (going from 4-year colleges to CCC). It improves your odds of transferring to a UC if that is your goal.

Going off of your last comment: I’m currently at a CCC and I transferred here from a CSU (I completed my Freshman year @ a CSU and I’m now in my 2nd year at a CCC). Does that affect my chances to transfer to a UC? Especially Berkeley? I’m applying this Fall.

Thank you!

@joxygirl, you are fine. Reverse transfer is actually pretty common and it does not affect your chance/eligibility for admission at Berkeley or UCLA. Same goes for other UCs if you have less than 80-semester combined units from CSU and CC.

Fantastic, thanks again!
