Cal Poly 2014 Transfers and beyond

Unless you’re in a competitive major, I wouldn’t care too much about the GPA. I got into CPP with a 2.4 GPA but had almost all my GE stuff done. Didn’t even have an AS-T like a lot of people are getting.

@tehjoadsta but do you think it may have been a little easier for you since you were already in the CSU system?
Well actually idk hahaha because I have seen a few posts on this site of people saying they got into business admin. Al though they didnt specify which specific major/department, what caught my eye was their GPA of like 2.6-3.0. So I guess what you’re saying is true. Hopefully @comsce89 will be able to get in to CS. I guess I should look into FRL to see how many people actually apply and get accepted compared to other business majors

@CalDud sorry Idk anything about housing. What are you going in to CPP as? And GPA

@CalDud Yeah I totally agree with what your saying. I have always been a little skeptical about counselors when it comes to STEM majors. Its like they have little knowledge on how to guide them and are not aware about important thinks they should have done before leave community college. Im glad to hear your friend is working hard and succeeding in his major. He must have had a jerk counselor when he was told that. Even a 2.7 can get you into a solid csu for engineering. I have been told to reconsider majors by a few counselors but just ignored them because I know I do have what it takes and I have improved (went from a 2.4 to a 3.07 in 2 semesters). As for the golden four courses, I will definitely have all those done. Honestly my GPA doesnt worry me as much as my 12’Ws on my transcript. I saw a counselor today and she told me I still have a shot at the cs program at CPP. Cant wait to submit my app June 30 and wait for their response.

@tehjoadsta
Yea, my major is not impacted at CPP, so i might have a shot. I have a feeling cs at CPP will soon be impacted as well. CPP’s recognition for technical programs gets more and more popular by the day, and soon will include cs.

@pavingapath: what do you mean “I was in the CSU system already”? If I transferred from another 4 year uni to CPP, then sure. But I transferred from a CC just like so many others (and not the local one that seems to get priority).

@tehjoadsta ooooooooh my bad haha when I read through your first reply and saw Fullerton , i just read past “college” and Automatically assumed CSU Fullerton lol my bad. Ok well now that you’ve corrected me I’m a little more confident. Right now I have like a 2.5 but still have a full year to pull it up. I want to take as little risk as possible haha.

@comsce89: Yeah, Cal Poly’s reputation for technical majors is skyrocketing in my opinion. I was told by my Operations Research I teacher (you should take this class if you’re a comp sci major possibly, a few were in there) that the math program at Cal Poly Pomona was booming. I already attend Cal Poly and actually just got my spring quarter grades in yesterday. I remember in community college hearing about this “jump” you have to make transitioning from CC to university and it is a little intimidating the first quarter, but you should do just fine if you’re smart and hardworking. I mean, I am not really the latter (big advice to future students: procrastination was OK for me through my junior year, but I am already prepping for fall quarter), but I got good grades this quarter even though my classes were harder than previous quarters. You’ll get used to the fast-pacedness probably after a quarter.

The upper-division synthesis classes you will learn a lot, but they’re not really that much harder that community college classes in my opinion. CC courses I just dumped that knowledge into a garbage can and burned it, I’ve actually retained a lot of what I’ve learned from these general education classes which unfortunately/fortunately everyone has to take. Doesn’t matter if you finished your GE’s at a community college, these are different. I had a 2.9 when I applied, ~3.1 when I sent in my final transcripts. Mostly due to lack of trying, not lack of ability. Try hard your last year so you can make sure you transfer, that’s what I did.

Also, don’t freakout if a lot of people are failing. I mean, freakout if it’s you, but I have had classes where the average was less than 40% here (never happened at community college) and for most of my classes around 90% of your grade is based on test scores. My Sampling Theory class (STA 310) was just based on two exams (50/50). Some professors curve, which is not a bad thing. I am not sure, but I know that in my Partial Differential Equations class this spring from the first midterm the most common score was a 56%. I got an 80 something and thought I bombed the final but came out with an A- in the class. At least as a applied math/stats major (not a comp sci major) in my experience I’ve worked on a lot of projects this past year, which I never ever did in community college. I definitely am getting practical as well as theoretical knowledge. The education at this university I believe definitely gives you a good balance. I’ve never thought for a single instance any one of my classmates was dumb, but that may vary by department. Lol.

Soooo I just finished my Spring semester, which brings my overall GPA to a 3.5+. As stated before earlier on this thread, I’m applying for CPP this fall for fall 2014 under the CIS program/major from a CC. What are my chances? By the time I transfer, I will be finished with my GE’s & required major courses CPP has. What are my chances? I applied as a freshman a couple of years ago but got rejected. I don’t want to be stuck in this situation again.

Well reading the posts about others on this thread in

Cis. With a 3.5 and almost all classes completed I highly doubt you’d get rejected since it’s not impacted and not a highly applied to major. I wouldn’t worry so much. Just make sure you keep your classes straight and GPA where it’s at!

CIS usually only has a couple hundred applicants. With a 3.5 GPA, I’d say it’s practically guaranteed you’d make it in.

@Pavingapath @tehjoadsta Thank you for the feedback! Grr, the pressure is on until the day(s) they release the acceptance notice. Less than 3.5 months to go until the application portal opens.

@ comsce89: you and me are almost in the same situation. you had better check… last I checked, CPP does NOT take AS-T Math transfers!

I got into FRL with a 2.9. Winter 2014 but got rescinded because I didn’t have my math done before Fall 2013. I re-applied for Fall 2014 and I will have a 3.0 by then. During orientation for FRL there was like 6 other students including me. Finance strikes fear into people’s eyes  Not many applicants. You should get in. :)

I don’t think people are scared of finance, which is why it’s not impacted and a lot of people are accepted. Most people applying should get in. The year I got in (applied for F12) they posted their admission statistics and finance has an ~80% acceptance rate. 496 admitted, 125 denied. I do hear some interesting stuff from finance majors in my history class talking about Monte Carlo simulations before class starts.

Most of the reputation of the school is derived from how hard engineering and the college of science classes are here.

Oddly enough, when I went for orientation in Summer 2012, there were about 6 people total as well that came to that particular orientation in my major.

Hi Caldud,

I applied to cal poly pomona for the fall 2014 semester. My current gpa is 2.72 and it should go up to 2.97 by the end of fall 2013 semester, and it should be at a 3.0 - 3.2 by the time spring grades are in. Do you think I have a chance of getting in as a Biology major? Ill be done with the golden 4’s by spring. but will have no lower division bio courses

-Rob

Biology is impacted. They get a ton of applicants. I don’t think you stand a realistic chance of getting in if you have no lower-division biology courses taken. To be honest, I would take your lower-division requirements at your CC because if they transfer that’s money you’ve saved. There was a 46% acceptance rate the year I applied for F12. The previous year it was 30%.

This should give you an idea of what would be easy/okay/hard to get into. Several programs have become impacted since I applied, though.

http://www.csupomona.edu/~irar/stats/students/admissions/docs/Application%20Counts%20by%20Major_Fall%202011%20to%20Fall%202012.pdf

I did see that impacted biology program only requires you to have all golden fours and no prerequisites, I also went ahead and confirmed this with the bio department. How hard is it to switch majors when you are already there?

blackbandit and Caldud
Thanks for the replys. Right now my GPA is at a 2.59 and by the end of this semester itll be around a 2.66
an 80% acceptance rate for FRL is great!! Yea I thought it was around a 75% last time I checked but i wasnt sure which year it was for. I just put in my application. Gonna send my transcripts later. Cannot wait to find out
