Their website has a list of average gpa for incoming freshman for each of their colleges. For the school of engineering it is 3.98. Is this weighted or unweighted?

Buuuuummmmmppppp

It varies based on the major. Average overall is around a 3.8

It does not appear to say, but it would not be surprising if it were CSU-weighted GPA as calculated here:
[CSUMentor - Plan for College - High School Students - GPA Calculator](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU)

I’m pretty sure it weighted, I remember asking that question when I was on tour to the admissions guy. They had so many people from out of state. Once they said some GPA numebrs some kids broke out in tears. It was a little sad. S got in but he had a weighted 4.6 GPA for Aerospace Eng.

I believe it is weighted. When S applied we worked the grades into weighted format so it evens out for everyone based on strength of courses.
S accepted to SLO Mech. Eng. with 4.1 GPA weighted and SAT 1970.
Out of state, but not sure this is a factor at all.

I think it’s unweighted. My son with a 3.8 unweighted and 4.3 weighted (not sure about CSU gpa) was denied Aero. (SAT 2000, choir, theater, hospital volunteer, etc. (in State, 75 miles away…sigh…)

@biotechmgr: I do think being OOS makes a positive difference. DS’ stat were ACT 32, Weighted GPA 4.33 and he was denied for ME.

The ACT score - which CP prefers converts to 1450/2130. It has been disappointing and astounding how many very high stats kids from his HS have been denied at CP this year.

Note that CSU-weighted GPA allows honors +1 points for at most 8 semesters’ worth of honors/AP courses. So a student who took the maximum possible honors courses in 10th and 11th grade should have a CSU-weighted GPA about 0.3 to 0.4 higher than his/her unweighted 10th and 11th grade academic GPA.

It is unlikely that there is any college in the country where the incoming freshman have an unweighted GPA that high. So it must be weighted.

@dietz199 thanks for your perspective and sorry about the denied for ME. This is indeed astounding. We heard about CP when living in Colorado then had to move to PA but always kept this school in mind. It is becoming more well known nationwide. S really liked it and will choose between CP SLO and Virginia Tech. Good luck to you!

I just posted this on another CP thread…in reference to a boost for OOS…

The way it works is that by law the K-Community College education system is guaranteed 50% of the CA. general fund. This particular group had a strong arm lobby which put this into place. Therefore, the only education $$ which can be put into play by Sacramento are those for higher education. And, this game gets played on a regular basis. CA just passed a proposition which sends more $$ to higher ed, but it will never be enough.

Couple this with the pressure of all CSU to go to a semester system, regardless of how successful they are currently and it’s just not a pretty view into the future. I really hope that CP can remain the excellent institution that it has become and that CA students will continue to have access to that which their parents paid for

The UC’s are accepting a much higher % of foreign students. They have determined the attrition rate of these students is significantly greater than either CA or OOS. Thus, the UC campus will get the international $$ for some period of time and have a statistically significant chance of the seat opening up before the student graduates. This then makes it easier to take transfer students Junior year. In the end…one big game of poker.
