I have recently been accepted to Cal Poly and it says the housing applications open up March 3rd, is it true that you need to fill the application out on this day in order to get a dorm?
Also, what is the difference between the different Red Brick buildings, and which building is for psychology students?

It is a good idea to fill-out the dorm applications as soon as you can in order to get your first choice, but I wouldn’t think the first day is absolutely necessary. Most students seem to get the dorms they want because everyone has a different opinion of what they like. I also feel that most students are very happy with where they live. I know someone in a triple in N. Mountain and he loves it! I know a guy and girl in the Yosemite tower and they love it! My son is in Cerro and he loves it! I don’t know anyone in the red bricks, but I am sure they are happy too. You just need to pick what looks and sounds good to you and go for it. It will all work out and you will find that just living in SLO is awesome!

where do you see housing application?

you see it once you accept Cal Poly’s admissions offer. It’s the only way to apply for housing.

I only see “Congratulations…” (you are admitted or something). I did not see there’s “accept” link or button.

Okay, I see “Accept Admission” link. I don’t think I saw it last Thursday. But, if you click the link, does it you must attend the school?

My daughter found her roommate on Facebook. After you accept admittance, someone can go over to FB and create a page for Cal Poly Class of 2015. You can also create individual topics within the Discussion area. If you check on the ones for 2014, you can get an idea of how it works. Kids can keep adding Discussion topics. The Roommate Questionnaire is where you can find a roommate. Then create one for your *own *class!

Here are a couple of the most popular groups for class of 2014:

Even though the Red Bricks have it set up for different majors, it’s just as fun to live in the other dorms with mixed majors. “The Connections Program housed in these Yosemite and Sierra Madre focuses on social and educational activities and academic awareness as well as making a positive contribution to the community”.

Also, you get to list 3 dorms in preference of choice. And, it can be switched around up until a certain date. For instance, my daughter is in the College of Science and Math, so she listed Muir (where her major would be) as her 2nd choice after Sierra Madre and then Yosemite. But, later, after she met her future roommate on Facebook (who wanted Yosemite), my daughter switched her preferences around to Yosemite, Sierra Madre and Muir. So, it gives you some flexibility, especially if you have a chance to visit the dorms and see them for yourself.

My daughter is absolutely thrilled with Yosemite Hall and her Tower. Students who live in Yosemite and Sierra Madre will usually make most of their close friends within the tower they live in. In Yosemite there are 10 of them. But, there’s also a huge, central lounge/rec room where all the kids can meet and where the RAs have activities planned for all the towers. I think it’s an awesome arrangement! The rooms are larger than Red Bricks, as well. There are laundry facilities in the even towers.

Does anyone know where Architecture majors live? Thanks!

Just look on Housing and it will tell you where the different colleges and programs live, as well as Freshmen Connections. Now is a great time to acquaint yourself with the Cal Poly website and different links within.

Sequoia (one of the Red Bricks) is the living-learning option for Architecture majors. My son really likes it. It’s a real plus to have friends to work with on those late night projects. They have drawing tables set up in the study lounge and unlike many of the other dorm’s study lounges, it’s not a quiet room, so it’s a fun place to gather and get work done.

This website that I found has a lot more information than the housing link from the web portal!

In the red bricks, it’s only about half your major half random majors. So you still will be mixed with other majors.

If your bringing a car.
One thing I wish I would of thought about before picking dorm preferences is that the red bricks are furthest from a parking lot, except fremont. You would assume that you could park in the parking lot behind the red bricks, but you can’t. You have to walk to the parking lot about a mile a way. All of the other dorms have parking close to them.

Another thing to consider is the rooms in the red bricks are the smallest out of all the dorms and you share a bathroom with the most people. I honestly don’t mind the size of the redbrick rooms, but there is always a chance they will put you in a triple with a red brick. Most people don’t ask for triples, random people just get them.
