<p>Hi~ I’m a mom of a sophomore daughter at Cal Poly and I just wanted to let any parents know that we have a group on Facebook called Cal Poly Parent Community Group. It’s a spin-off from Cal Poly Parents which is also on FB. It’s a great place to ask all kinds of questions about anything pertaining to Cal Poly and your student. Right now I’ve noticed a couple new parents of kids in the class just accepted or in the process of being accepted to Poly. I highly suggest any parents here to join it! Just put it in the search area on FB! :)</p>
<p>I second that. It is a very active page with lots of great information and support.</p>
<p>My first post here. New Cal Poly dad. My son starts Aerospace Fall, 2012. Cal Poly was a big decision for my son. We live in Nashville, not such an easy trip. U Michigan would have been a much easier location, but we support his choice 100%. We previously lived in Northern CA. Who knows? The whole family may end up back there one day soon. I joined the FB page noted here. Waiting for my security clearance.</p>

<p>I think your son made a great choice. I know you are far away, but if you can make it to Open House in April, it will really give you a chance to see Cal Poly in action. My oldest son is a sophomore EE major and my younger son is going to be a freshman in the business school in the Fall. We feel very fortunate that we will have at least 4 more years with a legitimate excuse to spend sometime in SLO.</p>
<p>Welcome, Jim! And, I’m so glad that you joined the FB page. We have quite a community group going on over there! And, it’s nice to have more dads. </p>
<p>I can understand you feeling a bit sad about your son coming across the country to school. But, he chose a wonderful school. My good friend’s daughter goes to college in Oklahoma and we’re in California. So, she can relate to being a long-distance mom. Fortunately, they have family out that way. </p>

<p>Thanks for the welcome, everyone. We did tour the campus in August. We all loved it, especially my son. When we toured U Michigan last February, it was literally zero degrees outside and there were 7 ft snow drifts all over the campus. Pretty sure that played a role in his decision, even though Anne Arbor is a pretty neat town.</p>
<p>Anyway, we spent some time checking out the CP area - spent a day at Pismo and another at Morro Bay. The kids disappeared for almost a whole day hiking the hills across the street from Embassy Suites. They had a blast. Also hit some of the shops, restaurants and galleries downtown. The campus tour was excellent.</p>
<p>A funny sidenote - my son is a drummer in a band, so we stopped at the local shop there (Drum Circuit). We told the owner where we were from and it turned out he is good friends with the owner of the shop we go to in Nashville. He gave my son a Drum Circuit t-shirt. Pretty cool introduction to the friendly nature of the people in SLO.</p>
<p>I could see myself living there. Maybe someday.</p>
<p>So your son already got his acceptance this fall? When did he get his acceptance? I thought they were not coming out yet, or did he do ED?</p>
<p>He did his early decision application Oct 1. He got his acceptance email on December 9. He was pretty excited when it came.</p>
<p>2Leashes, I’m honestly not sad that he’s going to school far away. Neither is my wife. I’m proud of him for having the drive to go that far away to college without anyone he knows being there. I guess I have a secret concern that if there was ever any kind of emergency where we needed to get out there fast, we wouldn’t be able to. My wife’s sister lives in Santa Barbara, but she doesn’t drive and wouldn’t be able to help much, if at all.</p>
<p>What I DO really like about his choice from a selfish perspective is that it gives us an excuse to visit CA more often. We love Nashville, don’t get me wrong, but leaving the SF area left a bit of a hole in our lives.</p>
<p>We didn’t have the kids when we lived there, but we’ve taken them there a few times. They’re hooked!</p>
<p>It sounds like your kids are hooked on the Central coast of California! True, there could be a lot WORSE places to go to school! 
I’m so glad you had a positive visit. I love the story about the drum shop! What a neat coincidence! I think you should share this story over on the Cal Poly Parents group!</p>

<p>Well, there ya go! More trips to California are in your future! And, I bet you ARE proud! It’s amazing what our kids can do and WANT to do! One thing I’m finding over on the Cal Poly parent group is the willingness for families to help one another out. For instance, if a kid needs a ride other parents will work out a carpool or way to help. During winter break there was a thick blanket of fog grounding a lot of planes, but it was amazing how so many parents were able to help, whether offering a ride from a nearby airport or even inviting them into their homes. It’s a wonderful network! And as an out-of-state parent, it will give you peace of mind knowing your son is in good hands! </p>
