Cal Poly Fall 2013 Admission Decisions

Status: Rejected
Major: Mechanical Engineering
UW GPA: 3.89
W GPA: 4.35
SAT: 2090 (Math:790, Reading: 620, Writing: 680)
In state

Pretty surprised about the rejection, but it looks like there are tons of rejections across the board. CP wasn’t my top-choice, but being rejected makes me worried about my admissions to the other schools I applied for.

I haven’t received any other rejections, however, I have been accepted to CSULB and CP Pomona, though I am doubtful I will have to fall back on either of these.

don’t worry man… they don’t take essays or sat 2s… it’s really kind of a stupid admissions policy

After too many days of waiting, we got the word tonight: DENIED. This was a bit of a shocker. General Engineering. CSU W GPA: 4.05, SAT 1900. My son is crushed,so are we. That was his top choice. This does not seem like a fair process. At least he got into SDSU in the Honors program. He is waiting on the UCs to release later.
It sure seems like the Engineering majors are super competitive at CP.

Rejected
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Unweighted GPA: 3.95
Weighted UC/CSU GPA: 4.32
SAT: 2080 (M:710, R: 710, W: 650)

Lol GG people who have significantly lower stats at my school got accepted… Really weird.

Rejected…
Major: Biomed Engineering
Unweighted GPA: 3.91
Weighted GPA: 4.57
SAT: 2290

Not really my top choice, but I am pretty surprised by this result…

I agree. My son has some of his friends that got accepted with lower stats than him. This is something rotten in the CP admission process.

General Comments: Good Luck to others!

Just checked my portal for Cal Poly. I was rejected for math.

3.128 UW, 3.3ish Cal Poly Weighted
35 ACT (~2340 SAT)

Rejected.

Waiting 'till the very last minute (day before housing opens) to notify rejections is pretty cold.
D “not selected” for Parks and Rec - Sport Management
More important than her stats:
CA resident.(Los Angeles)
Private High School
Applied and admitted to 4 other CSUs
Waiting on UCSB. UCSC
Posting this from our hotel room in upstate NY. Later today we’ll be visiting a privite which award big merit $$. Good luck to y’all.

It appears with a high GPA, SAT needs to be well over 2000 for engineering/sciences.

^^^^ I would agree. Many of my son’s friends were rejected yesterday. All had very high GPA’s but 1800/low 1900 scores. Most were going for biomed. engr. One with a low 3’s GPA was accepted for journalism. We knew admissions to CP has become extremely competitive and are not at all surprised. In addition CP has used this same admissions procedure for years so I’m not sure why so many were caught off-guard. It doesn’t lessen the disappointment but hopefully everyone had back-ups.

Rejected. I didn’t want to go anyways, but I don’t think I would want to go to a ****ty school that can’t even release decisions in an organized manner.

Sorry to hear all the rejections :frowning: My DD was admitted into the Animal Science department. CP was not her #1 choice and she has committed to another school so we declined and hopefully that will open the door for somebody else still waiting to hear!! :)

Son was rejected as well. :frowning:

This is what the engineering department says regarding admitting less qualified out of state students:
The Admission office does not divludge most of that information, even to us. In regards to your concern about out of state student Admissions has told us this: “Cal Poly fills every available new student opening, based on budget allocations from the CA legislature and the CSU Chancellor’s Office, with qualified California residents. Because non-California residents pay the full cost of their education and receive no support from California tax payers, qualified candidates can be admitted over and above the funded enrollment. The additional funding provided by non-California residents stays on-campus and helps to cover the shortfall in funding for faculty, staff and equipment not provided by the State.”

You may want to direct the rest of your inquires to Admissions@calpoly.edu to see if they can answer those questions.

This is why so many overqualified California students are denied while less qualified students from other states are admitted.

^^^No, if you read it again, it says they admit the CA students they have funding for, the OOS are put on top of those. So they are not displacing CA students, the OOS just get let in cause of the $ thye bring to the school. If they didn’t let in the OOS , they still wouldn’t let in more CA students than they have funding for.

Yes, Shigarta, a student can accept their offer of admission and apply for housing before hearing from other schools. If they decide to attend one of the other universities they can then notify Cal Poly of their decision. I’m not sure, but I believe after a certain date there is a very minimal fee, however my daughter is now a junior and I can’t recall how it worked. Either way, she wanted to make sure she applied for housing right away. That was back when Yosemite hall was only doubles. She got her first choice.

Think about about a college class. You pay an instructor and need a building to hold the class in. If you can fill the last 2 or 3 seats with out of state kids, you make a profit. There is no additional cost if a California student is sitting in those seats or if they are empty. The limitation is seats in a class. They are trying to maximize the revenue for the last seats.

To 4ChicksMom: Graduating in 5 years is often true for Engineering and Arch. majors. But, you have to remember that these students are employable right after undergrad. No need for graduate school unless they plan to teach or for other career advancement reasons. My daughter, a junior Kinesiology major with a Child Development minor, is on track to graduate in 3 years and 2 quarters. She will have to attend graduate school to obtain her Master’s in Occupational Therapy. Believe me, it would be a lot cheaper to spend 5 years at Cal Poly and no need for grad school than it will be to pay for 2 more years to get a master’s.
