I was officially accepted into Cal Poly SLO for Computer Science just the other day. On that note, I have a few questions about applying to the honors program. Any advice, help, or opinion is greatly appreciated.

Do you have to be invited to apply? Or if I meet 2/4 requirements may I apply?

Is it worth it?

Would it help me get into the Blended B.S. + M.S. program as a 3rd year?

The things to consider when assessing an honors program are 1) Does it require extra work? If so, how much and is it applicable to your major? 2) Do honors students get enrollment preference? 3) Is there an honors housing option? 4) Does the program offer smaller classes in your major? The last question is the one that frequently hangs up STEM majors.

For Poly, from what I can find on their web page, they require minimal extra work, do offer honors housing and, by far the most important, do offer honors classes that are applicable to many majors, including engineering.

@calpolyslodream is this your first choice as of now for college? what other schools are you deciding between? @eyemgh The most disappointing thing about the program is that it does not have enrollment preference which would have been great at SLO.

@Sarah2116 Of all the places where that would be an advantage, CP is certainly it!

I’m not sure what major you’re looking at, but smaller classes, with similarly motivated students and good professors is a bit plus. Many schools offer gen ed stuff, but not much science and math. That sets Poly apart.

@eyemgh
I am looking at Computer Science and hopefully to eventually apply to the Blended B.S./M.S. Program (4+1) for computer science.
However, I think I might as well just apply to the honors program, and I can always drop out later if I get in and do not think it is worth it.

Sorry, I don’t know. I’d call them. They were actually going to phase it out, so I called last year to get more info. The office is very helpful.

I do not believe it will matter one iota on applying to the 4+1 my son is in it though in Math not Engineering but it is only about your GPA, relationship with your professors and your passion. If you do not already have your GE’s out of the way you can always apply or accept, as it isn’t locked in wood. If it isn’t for you or is preventing you from getting the classes you want, then you can drop it. Cal Poly already has fairly small classes, I do not know however, to be honest if they offer Honors courses in the few large GE classes, I honestly doubt it. Mine did not go for honors because he already had credit for too many of their required courses. Also housing is a separate decision. Many prefer the “real” dorms for the social activities, Cerro Vista is apartments and many say it is harder to make friends since most have a closed door policy (keep their apartment doors closed) Since the revised Honors program is only going into its second year it may be hard to get too many opinions. You can start in the honors program or you can also join any time your first two years provided you keep your grades up. That is a requirement anyway to stay into the program. I hope this helps.

I called Cal Poly yesterday and they plan to notify students about the honors program acceptance by May 1st, though they hope to notify as early as April 22.
