Cal Poly Math vs Univ of washington Statistics, which one I have to choose ?

son & father's dialog

I live in Seattle. WA
Son accepted Cal Poly SLO, UCSB,UCD,Univ of washington
But Economical situation of me(=father) is not so good, so final 2 univs are Cal Poly & Univ of Washington.

Father : did you choose your Univ where you have to go between Cal Poly & Univ of washington ?
Son : Not yet, But You don't worry about My Tuition Because I can make it through ROTC and FaFSA

Father : you know the How much is the rate of the money you borrow ? It might be around 10%
and when you graduate Univ ,there will be much Debt. I don't want you to be in terrible situation.

Father : around $ 37,000 per year you've go to pay to Cal-Poly But if you choose Univ of Wa
only $ 10,000 per year because I can give you $ 10,000 per every year, My son ?

Father : and Statistics of Washington Univ Ranking may be 10th all over USA
But Cal Poly is Polytechnique Univ so Math is not so good as that of Washington.
Cal Poly is famous only for Engineering & Architectue..you Know ? My Son ?

Son : But Name value of Cal Poly is very highly reputable, So I want to go to Cal Poly.

=======================================================================

What can I do ? headache...!!
Give me some answer.

Every ranking shows UW better than Cal Poly, even for engineering. UW is a better school with a national reputation. Cal Poly has more of a West Coast reputation.

ROTC will not pay anything unless he has scholarship now. If he has ROTC scholarship, then he can afford Cal Poly.

Do not fill out FAFSA and do not give him information to fill out FAFSA.

Maybe he does not want to live at home. Can you pay for dormitory at UW?

Yes, I can pay for domitory but I prefer he commute Home and Univ.

It will cost far more to send him to Cal Poly than for him to go to UW and live in the dormitory. Cal Poly is more than twice the cost of UW plus dormitory. That might be a good compromise. Maybe he just feels ready to live away from home and thinks California is the place to do it. If you let him live in dormitory, maybe he will go to UW.

UW is much better school than Cal Poly. Do whatever it takes to send him to UW.

If you can only pay $10,000, then Cal Poly is too expensive for an out-of-state student (the remaining $27,000 is too much for a student to self-fund). Didn’t you ask basically the same question in another thread?

However, if you can afford to put him in the dorm for frosh year at UW, that may be a good idea, as it will help him get better connected with the school, and student support services for frosh are often more readily available and accessible in the dorms than for commuter students.

thank you very much for your kind helps.

Very familiar with both schools. (UW grad, son at Cal Poly). If your son wants to work in insurance, or programming, consider Cal Poly. If he wants to go in academia, consider UW. Cal Poly is more selective, even though more people have heard of UW. If you can’t afford Cal Poly, then there isn’t a decision, go to UW. BTW, getting from Seattle to SLO is a bit of a hassle.
