Which is the better school for a computer science major?

I’d say cal poly… I mean, it’s really close to the beach, it’s sunny. everyone loves it there. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it… and there are some pretty awesome people there ;)

anyone else have an opinion?

I hope that this may help. My background: I graduated from Cal Poly with a B.S. in Computer Science in 2005. I briefly worked as a software engineer, and then moved back east for graduate school and law school. I like to think I’m relatively familiar with both of these institutions.

In my opinion, if you’re looking for immediate employment after graduation, I would recommend Cal Poly. The curriculum is heavily project-based, which can be quite helpful in an attempt to “hit the ground running” after college. On the other hand, if you are looking to go on to graduate school for a career in academia, I’d probably recommend GWU. They are (arguably) a more well known institution, and have a decent cachet, at least out east. It really depends on your end game.

Overall, both are good schools, and I hope you are proud wherever you may go.

They are both good schools, located on opposite sides of the country. If you chose GW, you get to go to school in DC, you’re right in the middle of the action. You get more of a city environment which is great if you’re like me and you like cities and all they have to offer. If you chose SLO, it is probably a bit more laid back, definitely has a small town feel to it since it is a small town. The closet large city in 200 miles away. It’s nice for people who enjoy outdoor activities, like nature type things (hiking, bike riding, etc.) Cal Poly probably has slightly nicer weather though. It usually doesn’t go below the upper 50’s/lower60’s during the day. I have no idea about GW’s comp sci program, but I know Cal Poly’s is pretty good. You should pick the school where you think you’ll fit and do best at.
