Cal Poly Pomona a commuter campus?

I’ve read some threads on here saying that Cal Poly Pomona is a commuter campus for the most part. I just wanted to know if there was anyone who is not a commuter student. I’m a transfer student from Bakersfield College and I live about 3 or more hours away from Pomona. Anyone else not from the area??

They don’t have enough dorms/suites to accommodate their students. I applied for the suites twice and didn’t get in. I applied what I thought was early too. It’s dead on the weekends. They need to basically build a ton of housing is what I think needs to happen. Then it wouldn’t be as bad of a commuter campus anymore.

However, during the week, it seems like there’s always something going on. I don’t get a “commuter” feel until I walk 10 minutes from the campus to my car when the day is over. I definitely commute and I don’t know anyone that doesn’t. If you’re looking for the “college experience” you’re better served living in the dorms/suites/university village. Join one of the frats/sororities for Greek life (they only represent around 1% of the student population though). The education is great. I lived about an hour away from Bakersfield near Mojave and have an apartment near Claremont for school. Drive isn’t too terrible unless you’re coming home between 3-7 PM.

I applied for the suites too, but didn’t get in. I was on the wait list and decided to get out a week before school started since I found a place to stay off campus. I was top 50 on the wait list when I got off it. So most of the students at this school are mainly from the surrounding cities of Pomona then? I figured I would get more opportunities here than in CSUB so I chose CPP instead. What’s your major CalDud?

@fsilva91, you’ll get more opportunities than at Bakersfield, trust me. CPP has one of the largest residential communities in the CSU as a percentage of the campus population. It’s a draw from around the state for unique majors in engineering, agriculture, architecture and the sciences. The campus has a long way to go in shaking the commuter label, but the shortage of housing is a sign that things will get better in the future, but maybe not soon enough for you. Regardless, there’s plenty to do and people to meet as is now. Good luck and have fun!

Ok, hopefully I can still get better job opportunities here than at Bakersfield even though CPP is not known for my major (Business Administration).

the atmosphere is housing is very repressive, so it is better to commute, for sure

Absolutely

I must say, when I took my son and his friend for a campus visit/tour last spring, the ducks and turtles were quite charming but the housing left much to be desired. Sorry, just keeping it real… it has to be said. Hopefully they will make improvements sooner than later.

@sunnySoCalMom, You must be referring to the old dorms. Did you check out the Suites on the other end of campus? They’re only a few years old with really nice amenities such as private kitchens, and beautiful views and courtyards. Your son could be living here his second year (the old ones are the only choice for freshmen). I’ve also heard talk of tearing down the old ones and building new ones in the coming years.

Hello @mrsleonore. Yes, I’m sure the freshman dorms that we toured were the old dorms that you mentioned. I hope the talk of upgrading will soon be put into action. I believe CPP is a very good university with so much to offer! While touring the other side of campus, our guide pointed out the suites and described how nice they are. We were bummed when he remarked, “The suites are untouchable until junior year”. I now wonder if there are exceptions? Our guide also informed us of new construction that would soon be taking place in the general area near the suites. Based on our visit, It seemed like the side of the campus where the suites are located had an entirely different vibe that was much more upbeat and lively than the location of the old dorms.

Theres a housing shortage? In a couple of years ill probably be transferring to CPP from Comm. College, and i wanted to live on campus, preferably the Suites. Going for a Business Admin major too. When should i apply, when the time comes, to make sure i get a spot?
