Hey everyone, I'm a student at Santa Barbara City College and I'm planning on apply to Cal Poly Pomona's architecture program this October (for Fall 2015 enrollment). I know the program is competitive but here are my stats:

-CSU GPA: 3.7
-"Golden Four" Requirement: 2 Completed (Math & English), 2 In-progress (Communication & Physics, will be completed by Fall 2014)
-Very closed from obtaining AS Degree in Drafting (Know CAD and Hand Drafting).

Base on what's above, what do you think my chances are for admission?
(And any other college recommendations?)

Hello.
I think you might have a good chance of getting in if you’re a transfer student with a 3.7.

Having a high GPA will get students in the door. The next step is the portfolio. The portfolios will place students in a specific year (1st, 2nd, or 3rd year out of 5 years). If the community college have a good architecture program, students can get in 2nd or 3rd year. That means they won’t have to compete with all the students applying for 1st year. If students don’t have a portfolio or if it’s not up to par with Cal Poly’s standards, they will be placed in 1st year. I realized all community colleges are not the same and its based on department.

Rumor:
Recently, I heard that the new dean for Cal Poly Pomona has been experimenting with accepting a few students from each community college. I don’t know if this is true. There were a few students being accepted last year when there was a dry spell for a long time (around a couple of years). I don’t know if the acceptance rate was low or from different factors. All I know was that they didn’t even have a GPA as high as yours and they were going in 1st year. My assumption is that due to the high dropout rate for the program is more than 50% for freshmans, they’ve been accepting more transfer students? A lot of freshies have been unable to keep up with the workload. Their time management skills can be improved. Also, I heard that someone finally figured out a way to put more students into their program by cutting their tables in half. -.-!

Sometimes, I have doubts about going to a this school but it’s all that I can afford now. Sci-Arc and Cal Poly SLO, I believe, is much better. But the distance and the price is out of my range. I think that Cal Poly Pomona’s stiff system is to be blamed. Hopefully, the new dean can change the program so it can be competitve as Cal Poly SLO and Sci-Arc. Sci-Arc was established by a ex-Cal Poly Pomona’s member. Obviously, he saw something that Cal Poly lacked and put in on the map while Cal Poly Pomona is still… working on it. Oh well.

Here are some things to put in for your portfolio:
Design/Conceptual Work
Fine arts (printmaking, sculpture, painting, ceramics)
Freehand Drawing
Model Building
Photography
Studies in Color Theory
Transformation Projects

All portfolios must be 8.5"x11" and must mention the project title, problem, date, course, college, and instructor. It must be mounted.

I just applied for Fall 2015 (hopefully 2nd year) and my GPA isn’t as high as yours. You might have a better chance.

Good luck!

-R

Hi. what classes are you taking to satisfy the golden four? Aren’t math and Physics under the same area? Make sure you are not missing one more English class or counting communication in two areas. I also applied this year, but my college only offer a few arch classes, hopefully that’s enough…ha ha ha . good luck

hey guys, @screennamer ya i went to the portfoilo workshop and got all that info, thanks for the headsup. Did you apply also? And my fall back plan is I got a TAG with UC davis for the sustainable environment design program and i was planning on getting my masters in architecture if pomona doesn’t take me. I know the program is super impacted and it is mostly freshmens but i hope that they realize college GPAs are probably more dependable. But anyways best luck to you
@alexteoo math and physics is not the same area. I took the first year of calculus at my college, introduction to physics with calculus, communications (argumentation and debate) and a higher level english (mostly poetry, short stories, plays) but you can get that info from assist.org. make sure to get good grades in those classes! A counselor told me the average accepted GPA is around 3.7 and above! Yikes!
just got my acceptance letter yesterday!! stoked to go!
anybody else get a response?
