Cal Poly Pomona Class of 2023 - Applicant Thread

Waitlisted
CS
EI 4454
In State, Local

Son just waitlisted today. CSU GPA: 3.78, SAT 1440. I think his EI is around 4100 or 4200. First choice major CS, second choice CIS. @Gumbymom do you know how this works? Was he waitlisted for his first choice CS? Or did he not even get into CIS? Would seem strange to me not getting into CIS with his stats.

@hopefuldadinoc your sonā€™s EI is 4464. CSU GPAx800+1440

@hopefuldadinoc: CPP does not specifically address how they handle the alternate major but in the past, if the applicant was not admitted to their 1st choice major, they were offered the alternate major if room was available. Perhaps CIS was already full? I would contact admissions to verify and his EI is 4464 which is well above the usual EI threshold. Much depends upon how he compares to the other applicants.

Thanks @eddieboysr but I thought I saw a more complicated formula for STEM majors that more heavily weights the math section of the SAT. Looks like this: College Preparatory Grade Point Average* X 600) + SAT Critical Reading + (2 X SAT Math). Seems to apply for CSULB, canā€™t find it elsewhere.

@hopefuldadinoc: Only SJSU and CSULB use the STEM EI. If other CSU campuses are using the STEM EI, they are not stating it on their website.

@eddieboysr never mind I see now the CPP doesnā€™t to this, thanks @Gumbymom BTW, did you list a second choice major?

@Gumbymom Thanks for the info on EI. Can you also tell me: if an applicant lists a first choice and second choice major and gets waitlisted, did they get waitlisted for the 1st choice and still a chance for 2nd choice? Or did they not get into either? How do we know which major he is waitlisted for (the portal doesnā€™t say)?

@Gumbymom so when it was time to send SAT scores to colleges, I just sent it the 4 schools for free right. But the only csu I sent them to was CSULB. (Because I read that if you send the sat to one CSU that all of them recieve it) is it possible that they maybe did not recieve my SAT score so that they could do the superscore? In that caseā€¦ should I try to call them tommorow?
Major:Aerospace Eng
CSU GPA: 3.86
first sat: 1360
Second sat: 1360
Superscore: 1420

@hopefuldadinoc: This is from the website:::

How does the waiting list work?
After the first run of assignments, a waitlist is compiled with the names of the students that did not receive a space. Students on the waitlist will be given a waitlist position number in the same order as their date and time the Application was submitted online. Students will continue to be on the waitlist until they are provided an assignment or the student withdraws their name from the waitlist. As we receive cancellations, we contact the next person on the waitlist and offer them the space. We will continue to offer spaces as long as cancellations are received in our office.

CPP usually waitlists on the 1st choice major. My advice is have your son call admission and ask to change his 1st choice major to CIS and see if they will be able to accommodate him now without the waitlist.

@Rdhun01: If you sent your scores to one CSU, then all CSUā€™s would share that information. You can check on your student portal to confirm that your scores were received by CPP. For Aerospace Engineering, test scores are required for admission and they usually have a ā€œto doā€ list if anything is missing from your application. Calling to confirm would be better.

Thanks @Gumbymom for the waitlist info. Thatā€™s encouraging and disappointing at the same time. Whatā€™s the point of allowing a second choice if theyā€™re going to take so long to waitlist you for your first choice? Iā€™ll definitely be calling admissions tomorrow as you suggested but Iā€™m worried now that itā€™s so late in the game that his second choice may already be full.

Honestly Iā€™m quite shocked I was rejected. I expected to get rejected at SLO, but I thought I would get at least waitlisted at Pomona. While I do have a pretty low CSU GPA of 3.48, I have a 1480 SAT (770 Math/640 English). So far, Iā€™ve got all 4s and 5s on all 8 AP Exams I have taken (I will be taking 3 more this May). Iā€™m pretty disappointed, as I thought my standardized tests would help me on the application and I wanted to go to CPP.
It says ā€œCPP Deny - Redirectā€ under my status.
My major is Aerospace Engineering.

Correction: My English section on the SAT was 710, so my total is 1480.

@dbfan: Your EI is 4264 so competitive but not a guarantee for Aerospace based on last yearā€™s accepted student stats. Many highly competitive applicants these past few years so you need both high GPA and test scores. Any other options?

Also, does every rejection say ā€œCPP Deny - Redirectā€ or only some?

@dbfan: Only some rejections will have the Redirect message.

Redirection
ā€¢ Applies to all CSU-eligible undergraduate applicants who have not been admitted to any CSU campus
ā€¢ Applies to:
ā€¢ First-time Freshman
ā€¢ Associate Degree for Transfers ā€¢ Upper Division Transfers
ā€¢ Considered CA residents for Tuition purposes

Eligible applicants will be notified of option to be redirected
ā€¢ Fall ā€“ After April 1st
ā€¢ Spring/Winter ā€“ After November 1st
ā€¢ Sent to Cal State Apply to provide response and select
non-impacted campus first and second choice
ā€¢ Applicants have 21 days to respond via Cal State Apply
ā€¢ Then an additional 14 days
ā€¢ If no response will be redirected to a non-impacted campus with capacity
ā€¢ Provides a safety net to all CSU eligible applicants

Oh thanks. Thatā€™s weird though, because I have been admitted to another CSU campus. So this is kind of in between rejection and a waitlist?

@dfbfan11: Since your major was impacted, then you are also redirected according to the CSU website.

First-time freshman not admitted for impacted majors would be eligible for redirection and would be notified of CCC options, ADTs, and encouraged to transfer in the future.
