Cal Poly Pomona or SLO for chemical engineering?

I am a senior in high school right now and I am looking at different schools to apply to in California. I live in Hawaii so in state isn’t the best option for my major.
Some schools that I have been considering are:
UCLA
UCI
Santa Clara
One of the cal polys

I have family in LA but I would give up loation for a good education. And I am open to other suggestions on schools.
Thanks.

@Notarobot18 The state schools in California (UCs and CSUs) have high non-resident tuition rates, and they offer no financial aid to non-residents. If you are a resident of Hawaii, then schools like UCLA, UCI, or Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo will be very expensive for you. Note also that Cal Poly-SLO doesn’t offer chemical engineering.

Some of the less popular California state schools participate in the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program. This program offers discounts on the normal non-resident tuition rate to residents of other Western states, including Hawaii. Typically the WUE rate is 50% more than the in-state rate. Cal Poly-Pomona is the only WUE school in California that offers chemical engineering, so that could be your best option.

Private universities, like Santa Clara, don’t discriminate against non-residents in terms of tuition or financial aid. However, the only private universities in California that offer ChemE are Stanford and USC, and they are both very difficult to get into. Santa Clara doesn’t have ChemE.

For more options, you might want to look at WUE schools in other western states, not just California. According to the WUE website, the full list of WUE schools that offer ChemE is:

Cal Poly - Pomona
Colorado State University
University of Idaho
Montana State University, Bozeman
University of Nevada, Reno
New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology
New Mexico State University
University of New Mexico
University of North Dakota
South Dakota School of Mines and Technology
University of Utah
Washington State University
University of Wyoming

stats, story and budget?

I looked into the WUE program for cpp and I didn’t se chemical engineering but I’ll lookagain, thanks. I kinda new that any school that I wanted to go to was going to be expensive for me, especially because my heart is set on California. Thank you for the research! Seems like I have more to look into.

SAT-1450
ACT-31

(I am retaking both though)
GPA-4.2 (I was only allowed to take AP from junior year at my school) but I have gotten all A’s my entire high school career

I have a few ec, piano, NHS, JNHS, and I am on my second year as president for Relay for Life at my school

Junior year AP- Physics (3), language and comp (4), Japanese (not out yet), calc bc (5)
Senior year- calc 3, AP physics C, AP chem, AP psych, AP lit

Budget- I have about 100k in college savings but my dad is retiring before I go to college (July) and he is the bread winner in the family

Story- I don’t know what to put but I am a half Japanese female and my family will be sending two students to college once I start attending (we are the last 2 dependants)

WUE schools exclude many popular and competitive majors from their list. Only Industrial Engineering or Engineering technology are available in this program for CPP.

It looks like you are correct – ChemE is not on the CPP list of “WUE Eligible Majors” at
https://www.cpp.edu/~admissions/wue.shtml

I was looking at the CPP page at the WUE website, which may have outdated information.

100k will last you a year and a half at a UC oos

I am confused about what majors apply, I think I might give them a call.

Sadly, it is true that UCs are costly. I know many people who are great students who have been accepted but just can’t afford it (including a student who even got a national merit scholarship) from my school. I guess my real question is if the image and name of UCLA is “worth it”. I have also read that their resources are going down due to budget cuts so I am liking CPP more and more everyday. But my mom says that I could do better with my hard work in high school.

My guess is that you’ll get into UCI, Santa Clara and both Cal Poly campuses. Of course, only CPP participates in WUE so, it is gonna be expensive at CP SLO or UCI. I’d be inclined to apply to Univ of San Diego and Loyola Marymount too - they are more likely than Santa Clara to offer merit money.

With your straight A record and 1450 SAT and 31 ACT, you may get a full tuition to full ride scholarship at some schools, some of which offer chemical engineering:

However, this list does not include any schools in California.

Thanks, I’ll look into it.
