I’ve read that California State University, East Bay changed their university name from Hayward to East Bay to “adopt a new, broader mission to serve the eastern San Francisco Bay Area in 2005 [and] to reflect the university’s more widespread objective.” Some people that I’ve talked to said the university did not want to just limit themselves to the city of Hayward and that the city of Hayward in the university name would not attract a lot of students from other areas in California. So, should Cal Poly Pomona change their university name to Cal Poly, San Gabriel Valley? I think this would not affiliate the university with Pomona, which is known to have a bad reputation like Hayward. What do you guys think? Thanks.

That would be a bad idea. Pomona College, one of the most prestigious liberal arts colleges in the country, is not even in Pomona anymore and they still choose to call themselves POMONA College. I don’t know what people’s hang up is about acknowledging the schools roots because they think Pomona has a bad connotation. W.K. Kellogg was generous enough to donate his ranch in the city of POMONA and he would roll over in his grave at the thought of CPSGV. We should be proud of our heritage instead of contemplating renaming our campus Cal Poly “Ambiguous Geographical Area”.

I think Kellog would understand since Pomona is a run-down city now and Pomona is close enough to San Dimas too that it could be known as Cal Poly San Dimas. I don’t like the idea of CP San Gabriel Valley. CSU Northridge used to be called CSU San Fernando Valley and it makes the school feel more like a commuter school. I think re naming it to San Dimas would be best.

They should drop the city altogether and switch to:

“California State Polytechnic University”
or
“Cal State Poly”

I’m with Leonore, If Pomona College, one of the most prestigious colleges in the country can live with it, so can Cal Poly. Pomona, for all it’s problems such as crime and poverty, is the closest thing there is to a real city besides Pasadena and Los Angeles. It has a historic and reviving downtown area with a budding arts scene and developers have even started creating trendy urban loft type apartments there. In a decade or so, it may be just another gentrified neighborhood. Besides, changing names would take Cal Poly decades to re-establish it’s identity. Look at Cal State East Bay. No one knows it used to be Cal State Hayward.

Cal Poly Pomona

and change the URL to

www.calpolypomona.edu

I am curious. Why is it Cal Poly Pomona URL is csupomona.edu rather than calpolypomona.edu??

Probably intimidation from Cal Poly Slo. They want to be known as the only Cal Poly. We’re like their ugly little sister they like to hide.

By the looks of the latest common data sets that ugly little sister is getting hotter ;P

Well I think Cal Poly San Dimas or Cal Poly San Gabriel Valley would be better. Unless the city starts to change and become nicer it should change. Except there is not even a petition to change the name, so I just see it as an idea and nothing more.

Isn’t Cal Poly Pomona technically closest to the city of Pomona though?

Name one good reason why anyone would want to go to Cal Poly Pomona. It’s a commuter school. In a traffic area. Weather is hot. Not much to do. Unless you are one of the commuters it doesn’t work out well. Most people only go there because they only have one option.

I don’t know david12345? You should ask some of Cal Poly Pomona’s former alumni or faculty:

Current Secretary of Labor, Hilda Solis
Current chief-editor of the Los Angeles Times, Ed Harstein
Pritzker-prize laureate, Thom Mayne
Heisman trophy winner, Glenn Davis
X-game medalist and BMX rider, Dave Mirra
First women referee in the NBA, Violet Palmer
Fortune 400 billionaire, Jack Dangermond
Academy award winner, Forest Whitaker
Senator, Jim Brulte
U.S. member of the house of representatives, Richard Pombo
Founder of SCI-Arc, Ray Kappe
Architect, Richard Neutra
etc, etc

[List of Cal Poly Pomona people - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](List of Cal Poly Pomona people - Wikipedia)

But of course you are too cool to go there… XD

^You shut him/her up quite nicely.

And most of those people still reside in SoCal. And they are even more famous people who have gotten to better colleges.

And there are even more famous people who never even went to college.

Problem?

The Pritzker prize is the Nobel prize of Architecture. Richard Neutra was arguably the most influential architect of the last century after FLW.

And your point? Your point of listing the famous people? If you have some real good reasons why people like the school, then I’d like to know. That school reflects the area. Again, this is my opinion so please respect it. And I will probably go to that college.

OK I will give you a few reasons:

It’s $4,800/year in tuition (the third lowest in the CSU and about 60% cheaper than UC Riverside).

I has immediate access to three of the biggest urban areas in the United States (Los Angeles, Orange Country and the Inland Empire). With a wide alumni network in those three areas and internship opportunities.

Nationally ranked engineering and architecture.

Former ranch of cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg, the campus features buildings from Myron Hunt to Antoine Predock.

Largest Arabian horse research center in the United States.

Only hospitality college in the CSU, students help run and manage both a hotel and a restaurant located on campus.

College is located adjacent to upscale neighborhoods such as Walnut, Diamond Bar, Philips Ranch and Chino Hills.

Disneyland, beaches, the mountains, and snowboarding are all within a short drive.

U MAD?

Cal poly pomona is a beautiful campus! Go take a look for your self instead of bagging it on here.

Perhaps CSU Pomona would be a better name these days? The one Cal Poly everyone refers to is in San Luis Obispo and that’s where I am going. Pomona has some nice stuff, but doesnt compare to SLO. Pomona compares with Long Beach.
