Cal Poly Regular Decision Thread 2016-2017

SLO has come out with decisions on Thursday every year with one exception on a Friday, so we should expect to start hearing on Thursday and people will continue hearing back throughout next week too. If you dont hear back and you see others from your major post that they have heard back, it is likely that you either got waitlisted or rejected. They don’t send those out until early March. They do have some floating acceptances come out later in February so don’t lose hope completely but have a backup option. The first people to hear will likely be from CAFES so if you applied to that college, keep an eye out to let others know if you hear anything.
(Only reason I know all this is because Cal Poly is my dream school so I’ve been doing a ton of research. I hope I helped some confused people.)

@Gumbymom is it the same basic formula for transfers? and what if the major I apply to fluctuates from 60 to 100 applicants from year to year but stays at around the same intended enrollment, does the yield change? also thank you so much for all this info!

Also if anyone wants to chance me, that’d be great!
Major: Architecture
MCA: 4468

@Gumbymom I understand that the yield rate varies by major but it also varies wildly by college. Here’s a link to the yield rates from a few years ago http://content-calpoly-edu.s3.amazonaws.com/ir/1/publications_reports/infobrief/ib14adfl.pdf I’m sure someone can find the most recent one. I didn’t look very hard, so I have the one from 2014.
I still think it is helpful to know that in 2014, the yield rate for Ag, Food & Env Schie was 49%, Architecture was 52%, and CSM was 21%. So even though the yield rate averages at 33% those 3 schools are much higher and lower than the average. So again, good news for CSM:)

@mmkelly1: For transfers, it may be slight different since they have far less spots open for transfers.

I would still use the same formula as a guideline. Regarding the fluctuation of # of apps, SLO tries to use historical data to predict their yield, but many times they cannot accurately predict. The prior year before my son applied for CS, SLO had an additional 800 Freshman applicants enroll than expected, so their targets probably changed for many majors in the following year. The same could happen for transfers.

Again, I emphasize these are predicted/estimated acceptance rates and should only be used as a guideline.

jjmama is absolutely correct, acceptance rates vary greatly even among majors, not just schools, you can look at their projections from prior years, but it varies year to year depending a lot on whether the major was over enrolled or under enrolled the prior year. Cal Poly’s 2016 yield was very low in 2016 for certain majors and schools, I would think that they will accept more for 2017 because of this, but it is difficult to figure anything out as the Administration doesn’t always seem to act logically. As hard as it is at this point you just need to wait a hope if you are well qualified you manage to get in. Some majors only have a handful of openings a year, if it happens that they get 20 perfect MCA scores even full points means you might not get in. Some majors barely have enough applications to fill the openings so someone with much lower stats than you might get in. It is very difficult to predict.

Here’s a link to most recent census information.

Thanks everyone for the discussion.

@jjmama I see what you’re saying regarding the yields. A lower yield means even more applicants are offered admission in order to reach their target enrollment. I’m just going to wait and see what happens.

FYI - Monday 2/20 is a Cal Poly Academic holiday for Washington’s Birthday.

I mention this because CPPomona is not observing the holiday until December 2017.

Is there any chance that admissions will begin coming out this week? And do they come out daily or weekly?
@Gumbymom

@navyblue123: Only admissions can tell you for sure. In the past, it has been around this week in February. Again in the past, they start with the OOS applicants and School of Agriculture and Environmental Science and continue alphabetically through the Colleges. The majority of acceptances will come out over a few days to a week. There may be an occasional acceptance as it gets closer to the end of the month. Then waitlisted applicants followed by rejections in early March.

Since SLO did not offer ED as an option this year, it could change.

I know they usually release OOS first, but does anyone know if that’s by college too or just pretty much all OOS acceptances at once? Could an in-state acceptance from an earlier-released college hear back before an OOS acceptance from a later-released college?

@Banker1 @jmama gave me a different interpretation for “Total Cont. Total UG” which would mean there isn’t enough information to calculate percentage or yield.

It would mean this doesn’t tell you how many students they accept to get X number of students. Just how many students they want to end up with at the end.

@Grumbymom I bet they use a different yield # per major, and what makes them take so long is figuring out this yield. Many of the Engineering schools have huge numbers of application, yet probably get a much lower yield than say their Forestry dept.

@curiositycat333 I think you meant to tag @Gumbymom :slight_smile:

Probably… to late to do anything about it now. CC has the most cumbersome taking method I’ve ever seen.

@curiositycat333 The system rewards givers, not takers :slight_smile:

Did anyone hear from SLO yet…Waiting for sjsu too.

@Awakened SJSU admittances just started rolling out within the last few minutes–check your portal. Here’s their cc thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/california-state-university-general/1960865-san-jose-state-2021-admissions-thread.html#latest A rep from there posted earlier today on their thread that their results will begin rolling out Feb. 25th and right after he posted that people started posting that they’d been admitted (including my D). For Cal Poly SLO, all we can do is make a semi-educated guess that it might be this week, maybe. :wink:

^correction: I don’t think the poster I referenced above was actually a rep from SJSU. He/she is a currently enrolled student.

Thanks @luckymom22
