Cal Poly Regular Decision Thread 2016-2017

Can we register for housing as soon as we recieve our decision, or will that form be released at a later date?

@et006 I remember having to wait until late March in order to apply for housing. They might change it though this year. I committed for that reason, and it ended up not mattering. But then again, I loved the school and I never ended up regretting having committed. Might as well just commit to be honest. I suggest finding roommate(s) on the class of 2021 Facebook page (which if it hasn’t already been created [mine was created earlier because of early decision]) will be created soon.

Any chance decisions start to come out in full tomorrow? I know Thursday has been a commonly discussed day of the week for them to release.

I just called housing on this. Once you accept in the portal it takes about 2 business business days for the housing app to populate in your acct at which time you can apply for housing.

Do we know for sure admissions are coming tomorrow or is this speculation? Looking through past threads it seems decisions started earlier in past years than this year.

No one knows for sure. Last year they had ED and RD. This year only RD. It’s all different.

That doesn’t seem fair because of the way they roll out admissions. If that is true, then OOS applicants from colleges higher in the alphabet get first dibs on housing, and in state applicants from colleges lower in the alphabet (my D) have to wait days or weeks? Especially given that housing is first come, first served. I’ve seen various posts that the housing app doesn’t actually open until early or late March. Hoping that’s true, because by then, most or all of the acceptances will be out.

I don’t disagree. I think many people don’t do their housing stuff until much later because a hefty deposit is required at time of submission and not everyone can access $1200 ish immediately.

My older daughter was accepted ED in December of 2013, and she had her housing application and payment in the first day it was available, which I believe was beginning of January of 2014–long before any of the RD decisions were sent out. So without ED, perhaps it’s more “fair” now than it used to be.

@Lynn121936 If what you say is true about housing and it wasn’t just an ill-informed student volunteer that answered, that must mean that they have changed the system from last year. I couldn’t apply for housing until late March and I committed mid-February.

@zenmom3 The housing application will open BY April 1, 2017. It is not open yet. Once it opens, then it is available one to two business days after a student accepts their offer. If an OOS student gets and accepts their offer today, the housing application is not open yet. When there was ED they had an earlier opening date i. January, and so ED did have priority housing status over RD. But, with ED gone, all will have access one to two days after they accept their offer , but no sooner than the date the housing app opens. I hope this makes sense. My son is a freshman, and I’m waiting anxiously and impatiently to hear for my daughter. Good luck!

Can someone call the admissions office and ask them when they’re gonna release acceptances?

Better yet, call them and tell them to release now, and let everyone posting here in. Can someone do that?

I just called, and all they said was that they’d release decisions for freshmen by April 1st. They also mentioned that the portals are updated first, and an email about the decision could take up to a week to send.

Yes the “official” line is always April 1 but in the past they have updated portals in mid Feb.

Do freshman usually bring cars to cal poly? I remember hearing something about this in the past but I’m not sure.

Cal Poly is implementing a “No Car” policy for freshmen starting in the Fall of 2017. It’s on the website in the parking information section.

Is the “no cars for freshmen” policy only for instate? I’m coming from OOS and am 100% bringing my car- among other needs, it’s the only transportation I have to ever come home on breaks to include summer break, as we definitely can’t afford multiple flights like that.
