Called and they said the determining factor was my 8 semesters of math that could have been 10 because I left out Algebra 1. Dissapointed with the reason.

I know my test score isn’t that good nor my gpa, so I wasn’t shocked that I got rejected. I didn’t put in that I took Algebra 1 during 8th grade and if that was the reason why I didn’t get it, then that sucks :frowning:

@calirain - same here - D did not add the algebra 1 in 8th grade - sending an appeal letter - WTF this should not be TRICKY - i called to the admissions dept and they said she did not compete because she only reported 8 semesters, but to GET to Geometry you HAVE to take Algebra 1 in 8th grade to have Geometry in 9th. That should be a given, but I guess not. My D is so over it, but for what ever reason I am sort of hanging on. It is her journey but I feel frustrated that she is not getting all the options because their app reads wrong.

Well, my little brother got rejected but he is going to Stanford (got in EA). Lol.

My daughter is proof that Cal Poly doesn’t just look at GPA, test scores and traditional academic rigor. Her MCA was probably 3500 and she got accepted OOS for Graphic Communications and also received a scholarship of $1000 per year. Ethnicity and economic status was not a factor. And she doesn’t qualify for any special considerations like partner schools or anything. I think what made the difference in her situation was she was maxed out in extra-curriculars including leadership positions and 20+ hours of work with some experience in her related major. But I think the real reason she got accepted was because she took courses in digital media at her high school and the local university in our town for college credit. She also attended a two week camp at UCLA in Design Media Arts and earned 4 UC pass/no pass credits. I think all this showed she was serious about Graphic Communications and possibly earned some extra MCA points? I’m not quite sure. Frankly I was surprised she was accepted after seeing some of the MCA scores posted here! But as I kept saying to my daughter, God will place you where you are meant to be. If you aren’t accepted, God has other plans for you. if you aren’t a big believer, the same applies. You will end up where you are supposed to be. Good luck to everyone!

Wow what a bummer, I guess he’ll just have to go to Stanford! Hahahahaha now SLO isn’t making sense? Do they not take some students because their scores and gpa are so high that they know they would never attend SLO anyway?

Just found out my daughter was denied. Her major was Kinesiology.

@rainsmith Cal Poly accepts by MAJOR. So your D was only competing against other Graphics Communications majors. If you look back & see what the stats were for other similar majors. It’s very important to to pay attention to major when comparing stats on this page.

@curiositycat333 Yes I know that. But the GC MCA scores I’ve seen on this board for both OOS and in-state were all higher. Can’t remember but they were all in the 4000s I believe.

I doubt your MCA was only 3500 if you went through the complete process of calculating it with a CSU GPA.

Should I appeal if I didn’t put that I had taken Algebra 1 in 8th grade? Seems like a ridiculous reason for denying a student.

Just got denial email at 11:30pm. It’s okay. Lesson learned about inputting the 7th and 8th grade math. Hope future applicants don’t make the same mistake we did.

Could anyone who got their acceptance or rejection recently, please post your stats (i.e. accepted 3.85, ACT 32)
Thanks,
Anxious Mom

accepted, Psychology major, 4.18 GPA, ACT 33.
