I have been accepted to both and will be coming in as a freshman. I want to earn a B.S. in Biology with a concentration in marine biology or fisheries. I plan on going on to grad school and will most likely try to get my Ph.D in marine biology or something relevant to that field. Tell me everything you know regarding their campus life, hands on opportunities, internships for undergrad students, and how likely their students are to have careers after graduation.

I really appreciate it! :)

( Also I will be coming in as an out-of-state student and my family is all in L.A. )

Oh but I also sent in my ACT scores and application and paid the application fee within the same day before the deadline so it might just mean early submission=early response.

Thats not how it works. You applied early decision which means that you HAVE to accept them and attend. Humboldt isnt even an option. When you applied you swore to them that you will attend.

You only deny if you cant financially afford it or have a medical problem. When you applied you pledged to the school that you would commit to them if accepted. If you deny them, then you just took a spot from a kid whose dream school is slo. They dont take this lightly. Do some research, talk to your counselor and call cal poly.
And also, you have to decide before January 15

“Selected applicants must accept Cal Poly’s offer of admission by January 15th” and this is from their website: [Your Application & Deadlines - Admissions - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo](<a href=“Cal Poly Admissions”>Cal Poly Admissions)
“You accept Cal Poly’s offer of conditional admission through the Student Center on MyCalPoly using the ‘Accept/Decline’ link by January 15, 2014 (Early Decision admits).”
[Terms & Conditions - Admissions - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo](<a href=“Cal Poly Admissions”>Cal Poly Admissions)

I’ve looked everywhere and nowhere does it not give you the option to decline their offer. Where did you hear this? Were you a student or faculty there?

Im an incoming freshman. But early decision is binding. So take that with a grain of salt. I would talk to your counselor about it because I didnt know that you could turn down the early decision offer. Good luck

Well I am waiting to hear from certain scholarships/ financial aid to know if I could even go in the first place because I’m an independent student and I’m paying for myself. So If I cannot afford to go and get offered a scholarship somewhere else then that will be plausible reason not to accept. This school is my top choice so far, but it’s not really up to me it all depends on where I can afford to go.

Then you should not have applied ED. ED means you commit to the school, not that you wait to see other offers. If you decline them, you may not be allowed to go to Humboldt, since you would have broken the contract you agreed to and burned your bridges with CSU, not to mention any other school who finds out about this.

Oh I didn’t know I was talking to someone my own age. You talked as if you worked there or something. And if you went to my school you’d know talking to the counselors is a waste of time. Their no help which is why I come to this site.

Hopefully everyone out there still responds to my real question because I still am curious to know. Calpolyslodream thanks for trying to help but I really do hate it when people come onto my threads and completely change the topic so then I never get the answers I needed. Since it is your dream to go there I do hope you get in

And I would never purposefully steal someone’s dream to go there, I really do want to go I just wanted to know how the two compare. I have other friends who are curious about CalState schools and live on the east coast and don’t want to walk in blind.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Humboldt will not announce their decisions until nearly March. How can you possibly have an acceptance to Humboldt? Are you ED there also?

BrownParent like I said earlier it is financial reasons that would force me to decline any school in general. If I do not get any of the scholarships I’m working for at one school, then I will have to go to another one and according to their terms and conditions that is an understandable reason to decline. Now everyone please drop this subject and get back to the point lol >_<

If finances are an issue, you will find out of state tuition very expensive at SLO. And aid is very poor for out of state students.

Humboldt, on the other hand, participates in the tuition exchange program with other western states, so is considerably less expensive for OOS students also in that program.

If grad school is in your future, go to the least expensive school that also has a decent program. Both Humboldt and SLO have good programs in marine biology.
