I'm gonna decide tomorrow that I'm going to apply ED.

My top competitors are Santa Clara & USD. I'm majoring in business.

Cal Poly:

-Cheaper
-Kids seemed similar to me
-Beautiful Location
-Great Business Program
-Hands on Learning (fits my personality)
-fun school, but not a super party school (which i like - i like that its still a fun campus without a super party scene, as compared to like sdsu, or ucsb - im not that much of a partier, but do like to pary a bit..)
-Goal to produce career oriented business people (very little liberal arts / character)
-Big Campus (I prefer)
-Laid back

Santa Clara & University of San Diego:

-Business programs ranked slightly higher
-Over 2x as expensive (my parrents have the money, but still..)
-Snobby / Rich / Stylish Kids
-College designed not only to produce a business person, but also to produce character / sprituality (important)
-Beautiful locations
-Small campus

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna ED for SLO. 95% sure. But would anyone like to provide some counter arguments before I make my final choice? The only big thing I see really is that SLO is just producing business people, while the others focus more on producing character aswell. Other than that, SLO looks perfect for me. Any thoughts / arguments before I submit the ED to SLO?

Also, would anyone like to make a counterargument for business schools in about the same range admissions wise?? I figure I'd be regected easily at Berk and USC, and barely any UCs have business. id like to stay in CA, but am maybe considering miami.

I have a few relatives who graduated from Santa Clara, and none of them are snobby! (Neither are they all that stylish, but I would never say so.) They HAVE managed to become fairly rich, however…

Also have a relative who graduated from Cal Poly. He loved it. LOVED it. (He is also not stylish. My only stylish relative is attending USC. Figures.)

You have a great list - you can’t go wrong. Good luck with SLO!

thanks the more ive learned, is that santa clara is actually not snobbish at all actually. usd is more known for that reputation, and i’ve connected the two.

anyways, everyone who says theyve gone to slo has loved it, it seems.

Always go with what your gut tells you. If its “you” then no amount of prestige, rankings, pretty buildings is going to change that.

My rankings fwiw would be Santa Clara, USD, then CalPolySLO. But I am biased in favor of Jesuit colleges and private colleges in “general.” For some kids, the state school choice is the better choice for them. Go where you will succeed and thrive and be happy. If Santa Clara and USanDiego are not you, then so be it. I know people at both those schools who are very happy and doing well. But every person is different and that is fine.

You will likely get into CalPolySLO. When you get the notice in 6 weeks or so, go buy the gear…all of it. And close your books on other schools, bid them adieu and don’t look back. Look forward and best of luck to you.

my gpa is a 3.45 weighted. and their average business weighted gpa is 3.85. so I am .4 below. .4/4 = 10%.

But then again my SAT is 1400. While their average SAT is 1260. 1400-1260 = 140. 1400 / 140 = 10%.

So I’m 10% below GPA wise, and 10% above SAT wise, my courses are fairly rigourous, but nothing too special, so I figure I’ll be average on that. So I should fit in to the average, so I should be atleast 30 percentile on the admissions accepted. but then again because of the economy and budget cuts and people choosing cheaper schools, i figure that would probably drop me to very worst 10%tile so im still above the cutoff if you follow my logic. i figure ED mite bump that up a bit, and since its my top choice, and im pretty sure i can get in, i might as well know by December. im happy! :D

I think you will be fine. But remember, ED is binding and once in, you are locked. Things can get ugly if you bolt. I have seen it happen. (EA is non binding).

But since you love the place, then that is okay. When you get to school, be certain to focus on your studies. College is serious business. Its a lot of fun, but also very stressful and serious and it can shock you how many blow out by Thanksgiving because of laziness or partying. It happens.

You are plenty capable, now just do it. Good luck to you.

I just got accepted to SLO regular decision! im grateful i didn’t get in early decision to slo now.

I visited SCU last week and LOVED it. I also visited USD, and didn’t quite like the feel. Secretly, I was hoping to get accepted to slo, and rejected to scu, or accepted to scu, and rejected to slo. now my guess is ill get accepted to both. and i love both, so its gonna be a hard choice. they both have pros and cons. if i could get any more opinions on SCU vs. SLO that would be appreciated.

the other colleges id be accepted to most likely would be SDSU, chapman, and usd, if anyone wants to support one of those. but im pretty sure its between scu and slo now.

im 5050 now. SLO is cheaper, more students which I like, and more hands on. But SCU has a better business rankings, gorgeous campus, good alumni connection, everything seemed perfect and run smoothly, and it seems like scu really wants you and treats you as an individual, while at SLO your just a number.

any additional feedback appreciated! everyone at both says they both love both of them!

im concerned that cal poly is too much of a school traning you to be a worker bee, and doesn’t have a true university feeling. yet its a lot bigger which i like, and a lot cheaper.

Just pinged you LSkaiWalk. Its your decision…but take your time. You know where I stand on this, but I am not you. I just think the Jesuit factor is well worth the investment of time and money. It will bring you dividends your entire life, both personally and professionally.

Yes, thanks a bunch ghostbuster! I will make the decision on my own, but want to have the best information for my decision.

Thanks mom2collegekids. It’s interesting, my dad has talked to his friends / coworkers And has found 4 friends who are either alumni or have friends / family who are alumni and all are connected very strongly. One alumni had his whole family go to SCU. Lots of catholics really like the SCU alumni and want their kids to go there. All of the alumni have offered to talk with me and even to write letters of recommendation for me even though I don’t know them. The alumni really impressed me and their network seems strong and pretty sweet.
