I do go to the gym everyday for about 2 hours. I don't know if that will help at all but it's how I stay active.

I just recently got a job like a month ago but there is no where to include that on the Cal Poly app.

Do I need to take the SAT 2's in Math 2 and Physics for engineering at a UC?

Actually you look like you are in the running for all the schools listed. Feel free to apply to all. Your SAT is below par. Your ACT on the other hand is MUCH better and will allow you to be seriously considered everywhere. With my kid, he had similar ACT and got into SLO and 5 top UC’s for engineering. For SLO we only reported the ACT and no problem.

SAT2’s were not required for SLO and were required two years ago for the UC’s. However, I heard that has changed and that the SAT2’s are no longer required. However, you must verify this as I really don’t know for sure.

What was your son’s GPA?

Cal Poly SLO: Low match
UCD: Low match
UCLA: High match
UCI: Safety
UCSD: Match
SDSU: Safety
CSU-LB: Safety

I know all these schools well. You are in the running for all of them, but some are very competitive.

Cal Poly SLO: High Match (SLO is very competitive)
UCD: Match
UCLA: High Match
UCI: Match (UCI has come a long way. If you are lucky you might make it into the campus-wide honors program)
UCSD: High Match (Just as difficult as UCLA and in my opinion a better program)
SDSU: Match
CSU-LB: Safety (Impacted to the gills. May take 6 years to graduate, sorry but it is the truth)

Again, your SAT is problematic. I would not use it. Your ACT is fine and accepted by all schools. For SLO, if you are not really sure about your major choose Mechanical Engineering (ME) or General Engineering (GENE) for your application. AERO is more competitive and believe it or not if you change your mind you can always transfer into AERO later.

My son is ME at SLO right now and he started out in GENE. The way it works at SLO is that you can fairly easily change majors within a college. So, don’t be discouraged.

My son’s GPA was UW 4.0; W4.42; ACT 31; Math SAT2 780; Chem SAT2 740 – quite similar to yours. He was accepted to:

Cal Poly SLO
Cal Poly Pomona (Honors)
UCLA
UCSD
UCSB
UCI (Honors)
UCSC (Merit Scholarship – too far away, applied for the heck of it. The essay for the scholarship was really unique and fun to answer.)

Did not apply to UCD (too far) or CSULB (in our backyard, too close)

ok thank you so much

What are my chances at Pepperdine or USC?

Same – you are competitive. Pepperdine is an easy match. USC same as UCLA.
