What makes the quarter system so fast paced is that it seems you’re constantly hitting midterms and finals. You also get a good breadth of classes, giving you more exposure to different fields within your major. I think at the undergrad level, this is more important than anything else because that’s what college is really about–exploring. On the flip side, it doesn’t dive too deep like the semester classes but to get around this, they’ll program in a few series of classes (i.e. Compilers I, II, etc.). Also, if you get stuck with a bad teacher, you only have to deal with him/her for just a few months. The semester system gives you more time to “catch up” if you fall behind, whereas if you fall too far behind in the quarter system, you will pretty much fail the class and you’re stuck having to repeat.
Is there a separate portal to view the decision or will it become available in the “check status” tab of Cal State Apply?
@w00pw00p You should have received separate portal access instructions for each CSU you applied to. The Cal State Apply Check Status is only for the status of your application completion, it does not update for acceptances. I just checked my daughter’s to be sure, and there is no updated info for the CSU’s from whom she has already been accepted.
65,155 applicants for 2019. (2018 were 65,507)

@gumbymom thanks so much for all your help on these threads! Two questions: 1) Would you guess that Friday 2/15 might be the release, and if so will it just be a few or all?, and 2) We’re not sure we’re calculating the MCA correctly but looks like over 4700 for Biochemistry. SAT is 1560 but not sure about GPA for Cal State schools, probably around 4.4. What do you think chances are? Thanks.
MCA of ~4200 for Architecture, in-state. Hope it all goes well?
My daughter is also waiting to hear for architecture. Good luck!
@collegemom111111: The usual pattern for decisions in the last few years has been that they start with the OOS acceptances for a few days, followed by the in-state acceptances for a few days. Over a two week period, a few more acceptances dribble out then comes the waitlist and finally the rejections. They use to do the decisions by College in alphabetical order but that has not been the case recently. Who knows how they will proceed with decisions this year??
Your daughter looks very competitive so best of luck to her.
Good Luck to All! My D is a first year architecture major and loves it! It is a LOT of work but worth it. CP is an amazing school.
Looking at last year’s thread it looks like, except for a few early admits, the big wave started 3/1 which was about two weeks later than what people were expecting based on prior years.
would an MCA of 4747 put me in a good range for biological sciences?
I have offers to SDSU/CSU Long Beach /ASU/ UofA …but waiting for SLO. Business Major, 32 ACT 4.04 CSU GPA 4800 MCA. Wondering if I am in with even the slightest of chances?!
I’m waiting for Slo. I’m getting anxious. Chance me? I applied as a business major.
MCA: 3936
GPA: 3.05
ACT: 31
Thanks in advance
@jnagra - Maybe this helps - For the Fall of 2018, the Freshman admission statistics for Math & Sciences were as follows: 1) 11,923 applied, 2) 3,753 selected, 3) GPA 4.18, 4) ACT 31, and 5) SAT 1420.
Weird flex but okay
@CollegeFever13 - Do you have those stats for other departments, like Engineering? And do you have them for each major? Thank you
@homestrech99: SLO only publishes stats by College and not by major. Acceptance rates can vary greatly based on major such as CS has around a 6% acceptance rate while Dairy Science has over a 90% acceptance rate.
Here is the link: https://admissions.calpoly.edu/prospective/profile.html
SLO projections link shows the expected # of applicants for each major and the # of spots available to help gauge your chances:
@homestretch99 - They publish these stats by college, Engineering included: https://admissions.calpoly.edu/prospective/profile.html - As far as a breakdown by major, they do not list GPA but they do list the target number of new freshmen and transfers projected per major, which may give you some idea of how competitive each major is: https://ir.calpoly.edu/content/publications_reports/targets/index (scroll down to “Official Enrollment Projections”)
@homestretch99 - The breakdown by major starts on the third page of the Enrollment Targets and Projections PDF. For example, here is the one for 2018-2019, https://content-calpoly-edu.s3.amazonaws.com/ir/1/images/2018-2019%20Enrollment%20Targets%20and%20Projections.pdf. There is no key, but FTF = First Time Freshmen, NTR = New Transfer and UG = Undergraduate.
@Gumbymom - Sorry to be repetitive, we must have been drafting at the same time - LOL! Great minds think alike!
