If you want to do this, I’d suggest the following format so you’re comparing apples to apples. They are all things you will put into your CP application. Cal Poly looks at all these things and nothing more. This will hopefully prevent the “I know a kid who got in with lower stats,” because you’ll be comparing ALL the stats and bonus adders CP uses. Good luck!

Major

Cal Poly Calculated GPA

OR, as @sulliofnazareth did, post your MCA Score.

Can someone post the link to the application? When I tried starting mine I did not see the Fall 2016 term as an option. Anyway on to the stats.

Major: Aerospace Engineering
ACT: Math-32/English-29 (composite score 31, superscore 32)
Cal Poly Calculated GPA: 4.17

Would add in state or out of state (OOS) too as your your application goes into a different applicant pool and competes separately.

Many confused/frustrated applicants from past years when they were rejected with higher stats when those with lower stats were accepted - important to know which “pool” you are competing in. Good Luck!

in state

just wondering, is the 700 point boost confirmed? is there any source that says this? @eyemgh

All of the adders including the 700 points for both partner school and dependent of staff were both listed in an MCA Power Point presentation by Poly admissions. It was likely a presentation to high school counsellors and was available online. I posted the link in Keys to the Kingdom, but it has since been taken down.

What I can tell you is this. What we know about Poly admissions, any school for that matter, is based on educated assumptions. Sometimes the assumptions are very well backed, like in the case of having an actual copy of the whole MCA algorithm. Sometimes they aren’t, like in estimating yield for each major. This knowledge should be used as a guide and not be treated like holy gospel, because we don’t know that it is still valid (even though it most likely is).

What’s that mean for you @sulliofnazareth or any other prospective CP applicant? Don’t let down your guard based on what you read here. You can’t hurt yourself by taking an EC leadership position for example. You can hurt yourself if you assume you’re a lock for admission based on a bonus that they’ve since pulled and you don’t apply anywhere else.

This is solid advice for anyone, no matter where you want to go. Get the best grades that you can. Take the most rigorous courses. Study to learn the technique of standardized tests and get the best scores that you can. Develop a list of schools that includes TWO safety schools. By that I mean schools you KNOW you’ll get into, you KNOW you can afford, and ideally you KNOW you’d be happy at.

Good luck.

@collegekristen You look like you have a great chance to be admitted ED. However, you might want to check your GPA calc. 4.35 is pretty hard to get when you include your freshman grades (which Cal Poly does).

@ocgolfdad I’m fairly certain its right because I got one B and the rest were As, and I entered the CSU gpa that my school lists on my transcript (which is separate from the weighted/non-weighted and academic/no academic gpa which they also provide).

@ocgolfdad looking back I think you may be right that my cal poly gpa is lower. This is my CSU 10-11 GPA but I’m not too worried because I got straight As my freshman year. My brothers put the same gpa I did and they didn’t have any problems and both go there so it shouldn’t be a problem. People also say that they recalculate it anyways.

That GPA is possible, as is slightly higher. The MCA caps at 4.2 though.

Major: Industrial technology/Packaging
SAT/ACT Reading: 530, Math 440, Writing 560 (worst part of my application by far)
Cal Poly Calculated GPA: 3.8
Semesters of Math/Highest Math (do not include finite or stats): 9 (algebra 1- Pre Calculus @ community college)
Semesters of Lab Science: 8
Semesters of English: 10
Semesters of Foreign Language: 6
Semesters of Visual Performing Arts: 4
Hours per Week of ECs entered on CP application: 21+
Leadership y/n: Yes
Hours of Work per Week entered on CP application: 21+ in summer
Work was Major Related y/n No

California Vet (701) y/n- No
Partner School (700) y/n- No
Dependent of CP Faculty/Staff (700) y/n- No
high School in Cal Poly Service Area (500) y/n- No
1 parent did not finish HS (300) y/n- Yes
both parents did not finish HS (600) y/n- Yes

My chances are slim, I thought I had predicted my score on the SAT well but it didn’t go as planned. Hopefully ITP majors have a slightly easier time getting accepted.
