I'm not saying that CP is better or worse than the UC schools. But I think that the selectivity argument is a very poor one. Even if CP is more selective than a UC school, you can't really compare the two. I think it is safe to say that the caliber of students who apply to the UC schools is higher than those who apply to a Cal State school. So CP may be be more selective numbers-wise (and I don't even know if that's true), but their selectivity is among very different group of applicants.

actually, as far as Cal Poly SLO is concerned, the majority of people who apply to Cal Poly only apply to other UC's and don't even bother applying to other cal states. Usually, these students aim for UC's and the only state school they apply to as well is Cal Poly. So in that sense, the student body at CPSLO and UC's are of the same caliber.

according to pure statistics, they GPA admit rate of CPSLO and UCSB, Irvine, and Davis, are generally the same.

In the end, just remember that CPSLO is a great school as well as the UC's. What it really comes down to this: Do you want to do your undergrad, get your degree and go straight to work? Or do you want to do your undergrad, get your degree, then go to grad school? If you are the latter, then you might want to go to a UC.

alicante- If you compare avg. gpa/SAT accepted, and cal poly comes out on top of at least 2 UC's(UCR, UCSC), how can you say CP isn't more selective? As mindgame said, ca poly attracts a different type of student than does dominguez hills. (e.g., I applied to 4 UC's, 1 private, and Cal poly)
