Cal Poly SLO or San Diego State University?

honestly the hardest decision of my life for some reason.

both schools i loved when i visited.. but cant choose!

i liked sdsu because of the surrounding city and well.. its san diego, so its bound to be fun and a great overall experience.

however, cal poly is the better school and it looked much cleaner and like a tight-knit school, but the surrounding city isnt very exciting and kinda hick-town,.

but the only way i could probably get into cal poly is through early decision because the major im applying under is competitive.

if it helps, im studying kinesiology.

whatchya think?

At the moment, the decision for you is very easy. The first step is to apply and get accepted! Then comes the “hard” decision. So, apply to both – and make sure that you apply to at least 8 other schools as back up. Both these schools are impacted and your major in particular is very popular which means competitive.

San Diego is a great place and so is San Luis Obispo each for different reasons. I actually prefer SLO over San Diego, but that is a personal choice. I’d hardly call SLO a hick town. It is full of trendy shops, coffee houses with live music, art galleries, etc. and much of the agriculture surrounding the place are wineries. Last time I checked those were pretty progressive folks. I actually grew up in a REAL hick town in the South. We had hillbillies, shot guns, moonshine, the confederate flag and let’s not forget segregation (yes, I am that old…). The place I grew up in and SLO are worlds apart.

By the way, I found this recent posting by KristenBothwell on the Cal Poly site:

“Two years ago, my daughter applied to CalPoly for the kinesiology major. Her SAT scores were higher than yours (2080) and her GPA was a bit lower and she got waitlisted and ultimately was not accepted. We called and they told us that they had 1470ish applicants for 58ish spots. I can’t remember the precise numbers but it was along those lines. I suspect that a lot the sports athletes choose kinesiology and they get priority. Just something to think about.”
