I heard that cal poly slo is a great engineering school and alot of big companies hire from there. I cant find much about the u of a computer science program though. Which school is better in terms of quality of education, reputation, job opputunities etc?
SLO’s CS is program is very competitive with around a 10% acceptance rate. Many companies from the Silicon Valley recruit and hire from SLO so it is definitely a school to consider. I have no knowledge of UofA’s program.

@Gumbymom, I had no idea about the acceptance rate being so low. But I have done well in school and on the SAT so i should have the scores to qualify. EC’s are pretty much non existent though but i guess that wont really matter for cal poly slo? It really seems like they are very successful with their learn by doing approch for bachelor studies. At the same time i saw that uofa cs was ranked #19 for job opputunities on Linkedin within the cs field https://■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/edu/rankings/us/undergraduate-software-engineering?trk=edu-rankings-category-link-m. I dont know how accurate it is and it is really hard to find info about uofa computer science. Do anyone on here know anything about it?
CalPoly SLO seems to be well-regarded for CS.
However, I heard that changing majors there is difficult.
That makes me leery of it.
@PurpleTitan: If you do not get a direct admit into the College of Engineering at SLO is it difficult to switch into the Engineering/CS major at SLO. It is always easier to switch from a competitive major to a non-competitive major. You do have to meet the course requirements needed for the switch and they will review your record as in-coming Freshman to see if you would have qualified originally for that major, that is why many applicants find it hard to switch later down the road or try to “back door” it into a more competitive major. It is not impossible but not easy either.
@Lstrom: SLO can be as competitive for CS as the top UC’s so you really need outstanding Stats. Another alternative would be Software Engineering, which has a higher acceptance and very similar to the CS major. I would not base your decision on rankings since these are for Graduate programs and not undergrad programs. I would visit both schools and try to meet with CS department to get a better insight of their respective programs. I am not sure if you are an Arizona resident or California resident, but I would assume costs could factor into your decision. If possible, I could compare the 4 year class schedule for each program to see if there are any significant differences.
