I recently got accepted to both Cal Poly SLO and USC for architecture. CP will place me in the 3rd year if I take summer. USC will place me in the 2nd year if I take summer. Can anyone help me decide where should I go? Which school will benefit me more after graduation in terms of getting a job. Please, some opinion will help me a lot. Can you also let me know which school has a better program?

USC will cost you $55-70K a year. CalPoly $25K. Would you rather live in SLO or SouthCentral LA?

Talk to working Architects. Talk to alums from other top ARCH schools.

I have relatives at both schools, (not in Arch). I personally cannot see the value of USC, unless there is a specific, and very good reason.

A friend runs a large construction company. The family is all top 10 US school grads. They only hire engineers and arch. from Cal Poly now. He says they are ready to go to work and have practical skills, more than any other school they recruited at. But, of course, just one opinion.

In the end, your decision is a personal one, based on (hopefully) a lot of input. Bot are excellent schools, so you do not have a bad choice.

Thank you so much for your feedback. May I ask why did you say that you can’t see any value in USC?

Hey HeyImNew, my son spent a summer at Cal Poly SLO’s architectural program and some time at USC’s program as well. As you might guess from my username, I am a USC grad myself.

My son was accepted to both schools, but decided to go elsewhere. If you PM me your email, I’ll try to put you two in touch and he can give you his thoughts.

What about Cal Poly Pomona? Does it have as good a rep as Cal Poly SLO?

I think the answer is no, Pomona doesn’t have as good a reputation as SLO. However, my wife attended Pomona, had a wonderful experience while she was there (including a full year in Florence), and has had a very successful career in architecture.

Unless cost is no concern, either Cal Poly is an incredible bargain compared to other options.

I figured it wouldn’t have as good a rep as SLO. But still I hear Pomonas arch program is reputable.
