One of my biggest concerns about Cal Poly SLO is that I hear great things about their engineering and stats programs but do not hear much about the Biological sciences. I eventually want to go to medical school in order to become a surgeon and am wondering if Cal Poly SLO would be a good choice. Since they do no have pre-med but do have medical school advisors, I am wondering how the graduate schools will view this. I am choosing between UCSD (Revelle college) and Cal Poly SLO (I love the campus of Cal Poly SLO much more than UCSD at the moment… virtual tour experiences). Since I am adamant about becoming a surgeon I would appreciate if anyone has any input or experiences about wanting to go or going to a good med school after Cal Poly SLO.

UCSD has a world-class program in biology. If that’s your interest, you’d be better served there than at Cal Poly.

Keep in mind, GPA is the most important thing to go to med school.

Honestly, I think you should pick UCSD. Cal Poly is hands on and is geared towards getting you a job right after graduation, and UC’s are more theory/research based and are geared towards getting you into grad school.

Thank you! But I also would have to change my major at UCSD from biochemistry to biology. I got into Revelle College and I heard that that is the worst college based on GEs and visual aspects… Compared to Cal Poly SLO it seems like less attractive in that sense. I do not want to base everything on visual but I am spending the next four years of my life there.
