Cal Poly SLO -> UCI

I'm currently attending Cal Poly SLO with a major in Earth Science. I want to transfer to UCI because i like the school all together better than Cal Poly SLO. I'm a first year and I feel there arent many with my common interest. I feel like they are mostly surfer sports and/or party folk. I visited UCI Halloween weekend and i enjoy it there. I wanted to attend a UC when applying to colleges back in seinor year of high school but i didnt get in because of the economy.

SITUATION
-I am a 1st year undergrad at cal poly slo. I do not like it here so i want to transfer to UCI or UCD or any UC Campus.
QUESTION
-Is it possible to transfer from a CSU (especially one as distinguished as cal poly slo) to a UC?
-What would i have to do?
-If i transfer would i start off as a 1st year again?
IDEAS
-I was brainstorming and i was thinking i could complete some GEs in cal poly and serve my first year here since it's too late for apps going into sophomore year. and i generally dont think colleges take transfers until junior year...right? So maybe i could do GE's here at cal poly for my next 2 quarters, then take summer school at a community college, then maybe by sophomore year i could transfer to UCI? I dont get how this works in general so these are just ideas. If not i could try going back home sophomore year and take 2 years in a community college (or 1 if my GE classes in SLO roll over).
-Because they dont offer Earth Science I was thinking about majoring in archeology since Earth Science / Anthropolgy basically combine together to make Archeology. Would it be easy getting into this field?

The economy is the primary reason you did not get into a UC out of high school? Seems to be a bit of a reach.

But now that I think about it, blaming the economy for our shortcomings seems like a great strategy.

The fact that I am ugly isn’t the reason I’m not dating a supermodel–It’s the economy’s fault.

The fact that I have very limited athletic ability is not the reason I don’t play in the NBA—It’s the economy’s fault.

Wow this is convenient. I feel better about myself already.

I haven’t been exercising as much lately but you know in this economy it’s hard to get around to it…

lol

I was thinking maybe he meant he couldn’t afford to go there but don’t really see why else he would blame the economy.

THAT REAlly doesnt help!!! GEEZE PUNKS. i got much higher GPAs than other people. i was like at 3.6 or something… i even didnt get into UCSC or SJSU… but into cal poly. but anyways can someone give advice on my transferring issues.? sheesh. i know a lot of peole from my school that didnt get into the selected school they wanted to. mabe it wasnt the economy but it could have been. it could have been some personal UC / CSU thing they were changing. i dont even know… but still. help on my topic. strategies of going to a UC from CSU. THANKS.

You have yet to provide the most important statistic, your GPA. You have third priority (behind CCC and UC transfers). Your problem is going to be finding classes that transfer to a UC, so talk to your counselor about that.

I’d probably be less of a punk but this goddamn economy…it’s killing me.

so what about the deal with community college? if i were to finish a year here then start community college would it take me 2 years as well? or will it only take me one if i find transferrable credits?

Since it is your first quarter, I would just drop out and go to community college. Don’t waste your money there. Like you said the the economy…

Getting into UCI from community college is easy. Get at least a 3.0, 60 units, finish pre-reqs, and TAG your way in. And that is it.

Hmm… interesting. What’s TAG?

additionally. People say i should give it time. If i don’t like it now it’s better to stop while im ahead? I don’t know. Is dropping out as bad as it sounds? Like will it look bad on my app? Is it actually RECCOMMENDED that i drop out? I mean education wise im not looking for any better type of education, but its juts the atmosphere people and things to do. it just isnt my scene and i didnt exactly study or visit each campus i appleid to before deciding where to go.

Since you are new to this process, you should visit the UC Transfer FAQ thread that is stickied in the UC transfer forum.

[Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) - Fall 2010](http://www.admissions.uci.edu/admissions_info/transfer_admission/tag.html)

say goodbye to tag…

oh that’s hella bull. so should i just wait it out then? try to make friends in this process? i should have gone to a CC in the first place considering i didnt know much abuot the colleges i was applying to nor having any SPECIAl interest in a specific major. my mistake that i will forever regret. So then i guess i’m staying here for 4 years… i dont konw. fudge…

that doesnt prohibit you from applying still.

it just means that you cannot sign an agreement.
so i would think that you can attend a CC and then apply to transfer. (of course you’d have to submit all your units / grades)

Still stressing about this situation. this sucks. I should’ve just went to a City College to begin with but i decided to go straight to a 4 year. and this certain 4 year is a college that is very major specific and top notch so transferring would be stupid considering im alerady at a good school.

OKAY. lets say i dont want to do Earth Science, and want to do Anthropology instead.

What is the recommended course of action?

Most reccommended would be go back home, go to a CCC and take the required courses for my major in that school for more or less 2 years for anthropology and apply to UCI / UCD. Correct?

ok. and now im hearing from friends that i should just stay at SLO and find another major that interests me if ERSC isnt right for me. Feeling pressured to stay because people may think that i’m not giving it a chance.

my original complaint was that i dnot like the people / environment here. and when i visited UCI i thought it was the place to be. Thinking more about it i realized that i chose cal poly and my major of earth science on a basis of just guesses and advice. i thought ERSC is interesting and it is but i can’t picture myself studying it and working with it for the rest of my life. Cal poly is very major specific too. On the same slate i applied to all the colleges with no real idea of what it has in store for me. Regretably i accepted CAL POLY’s admission thing so now i go here. i should have gone to a two year city college and decided what i wanted to do. i want to do that now but i dnot want people to think i gave up. I need actual college advice. What do you guys think i should do.

bump bump, answer questions plx

BUMP. can someone answer my questions on the other posts

so what do you reccommend me do? im thinking of transferring to a CC after the end of my first year here. will any of my units i got here at cal poly transfer to the CC? so i dont have to complete as many classes ast he others?

I usually never post but I see no one is helping you and I can kinda see why. Go talk to counselorS and really think about it.

Even if you do manage to transfer to UCI you still don’t know what major you want to do. Do a little more research and assist.org is your friend for transfer requirements to wherever.
