What are some key differences and similarities? Prospective engineering major from NY here.

Post anything you know about academics/campus/location/proximity/etc.

Or you can suggest any other relatively affording California Schools (tuition=<22k) that are engineering oriented.

These schools are closer to $30K/yr all in and will take more than 4 years to graduate from. SLO is the much better school.

By tuition I mean not including room and board/anything like that.

And can you please expand on saying SLO is a better school… academically? overall?

i really know nothing about the Cal Poly schools but it seems like Cal Poly SLO is much more reputable.

If you are from NY, why are you only looking at California schools? There are tons of excellent engineering schools out there that you can go to for a good value.

Money really isn’t that important, but I still don’t want to waste my parents money and go to a school that’s 40k a year, even thought they would pay for it. Anyways, I have family in California, and I always love visiting there, so why not go there?

SLO is more selective, more respected and has better job recruiting. It’s getting harder in the job market for engineers, school counts more now.

Redroses is right.

SLO is also a much better collegiate environment since it has fewer commuters than Pomona. But still, you would be foolish to pay OOS rates to attend a Cal State (IMO).

Agree…Especially given how long it takes to get out now.

My dad gets paid between like 700-800k a year so it really doesn’t matter that much.

I still don’t get why you are so insistent to go to California for college if you don’t want to go to a UC school or a private school in California.

Long:

for the same $, attend a private California college instead. Much, much better environment: facilities/advising/recommendations/research opportunities/class size/etc. This is a no-brainer.

I’m not sure if my grades would be good enough for any of the engineering UC’s. I’ll have around a 3.5 GPA UW, with 10 APs, and I got a 210 on the sophomorePSAT, looking for a 2200+ on the real thing (I also run a 4:27 mile in track, so if I get that down to 4:14ish that will help). What schools could I get into with that with engineering?

That’s plenty good for most UCs, though in engineering SLO is as good as all but the top 3.

USC just LOVES high test scores. If you are NMSF, you have an excellent shot there, as well as automatic tuition discount. Santa Clara also does engineering, which would be a low match-safety.

Did you investigate OOS tuition and acceptance rates? You may as well expand your search to privates, as you will have slim chance at publics.
