Cal Poly SLO vs. Cal Poly Pomona

Not knowing too much about these two CSU's, I am curious to know which is considered the "better" of the two, meaning more prestigious, well regarded, etc.
How do the two compare?

SLO is traditionally the higher ranked and more respected school. However, that doesn’t mean that CPP is a crappy school…it’s a very good school.

I have a niece at SLO and a cousin at CPP.

Are you an engineering major?

Are you instate?

What are your stats?

One thing to keep in mind is that the experience of attending these 2 schools will be very different. SLO is a residential college with most students living on or adjacent to campus. Pomona is primarily a commuter school. If you have to choose between the two, this should be a factor in your decision.

The stats are telling:

Cal Poly SLO:
Admit rate: 34%
Yield: 45%
25/75 CR/M SAT: 1205 (superscored)
Ave. HS GPA: 3.81 UC weighted

Cal Poly Pomona
Admit rate: 61%
Yield: 35%
25/75 CR/M SAT: 1045 (superscored)
Ave. HS GPA: 3.35 UC weighted

As you see there is not much basis for comparison between the two schools.

I am looking to apply to Cal Poly SLO next year.

Are those stats new for this year please?

I found it on Wiki that Cal Poly 2010 average GPA is 3.9 and SAT is 1292. Does that sound right to you? Not sure which is right.

Also, how is either Cal Poly’s reputation outside of CA?

Thanks!

fermium, the GPA stat is a UC WEIGHTED number, so look at DunninLA’s post again since his stats are lower than yours^^^

fermium, don’t know where the Wiki stats come from. The stats I show are from the Common Data Set, and come from collegedata.com

It is important to distinguish between stats for ADMITTED students vs. stats for ENROLLED students. CDS is enrolled. Many college publish admitted b/c it looks higher. Many students who apply to Cal Poly and are admitted are also admitted to UCLA/UCB/UCSD/ and will have higher stats than the subset of admitted students who also ENROLL in Cal Poly.

Thanks for everyone’s quick answers!

@DunninLA
Yes, I do realized that the admitted stats and the enrolled stats are different by a bit. And the enrolled is usually lower.

As to where Wiki got its data:

http://www.ess.calpoly.edu/_admiss/Pdf/Profile10_51910.pdf

So the general Cal Poly freshman admitted is:

GPA :3.9
SAT: 1292

It seems to be getting tougher to even get into a CSU! It is almost same as UC Davis or UCI. Arrgghhh!

Do you all think I really should not compare Cal Poly Pomona and CPSLO directly because you guys said they are not comparable?

Locationwise SLO>>>>>>Pomona. Just saying.

It depends on the major. I got into both for architecture and while SLO is generally better regarded and harder to get into, the architecture program at Cal Poly Pomona is just as hard as getting into as SLO in general.

Cal Poly Pomona architecture
gpa:3.82
SAT:1179
admit rate: 18 percent.

<a href=“Cal Poly Pomona College of Environmental Design - Wikipedia”>Cal Poly Pomona College of Environmental Design - Wikipedia;

I checked out both architecture programs and chose Pomona for it’s design philosophy as opposed to a more technical program at SLO. Location wise, SLO is nicer but not to study architecture. I’d rather be in LA, where all the interesting architecture is. Pomona owns a historic modern house that architects from all over the world come to visit. The faculty is also better published and practiced. I found that SLO arch facutly did little else other than teach.

I would say, before making a blanket decision to go to SLO because it is overall better would be a mistake. CPP and SLO have the closest set of majors of any two Uni’s. Check out your chosen major, visit the schools, ask questions and decide for yourself.

I have been researching for college application for next year. I want to know more about admission criteria and what schools are viewed favorably.

Is it really true that Cal Poly Pomona architecture being just as hard to get in as Cal Poly? The numbers below seem to imply Cal Poly is much more selective.

Cal Poly Architecture 2010 admission numbers are:

avg GPA: 3.96
avg SAT: 1324
avg ACT: 30

Also, what about the national architecture school rankings? SLO is ranked as #4 in the national this year, but CP Pomona seems to be quite a bit lower.

How do you view the importance for this ranking?

The stats for Cal Poly Pomona architecture on wikipedia are referenced to the architect magazine article so they are reliable. GPAs are about the same for both schools with SAT scores being higher at SLO. As far as the rankings put out by Design Intelligence, Pomona came in at 19th, which is not bad for a public non research university. Those rankings are a survey of design professionals, so they are looking technical job skills coming out of college. I was looking more for design skills which are more difficult to acquire than technical skills, which is why I chose Pomona. Also, a more relevant ranking was put out by Architecture Magazine which ranked programs based on specialties, which makes them more useful. Cal Poly Pomona came in as a top three in sustainable design. SLO did not rank. Like I said previously, don’t assume SLO is better at everything. Look at the two programs, decide what you want to get out of them, and then make your choice. SLO is slight more selective in architecture, but that is not a wise measure by which to make your choice.

Thanks for the informative response.

I have also been looking into the student satisfaction level at various college. It seems on CC, there are substantial amount of current students and alums who just LOVE Cal Poly SLO. Is this true or it is just some biased minority with a big voice?

Also, I found this article about CP Pomona on the web featured in CP Pomona’s school paper that basically said many CP Pomona students hate CPP and they think Cal Poly Pomona sucks.

Why is that??? What is so bad in CPP that evoke such negative feelings?

The Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering departments at Cal Poly Pomona attracts many big technology companies to the campus for recruiting; Boeing and Northrup Grumman, for example.
