Cal Poly SLO vs NYU Polytechnic - Electrical Engineering Graduate Program

Hello everyone, I’m sorry if duplicate threads are frowned upon. Sorry about lengthy question and post.

My sister received an admit for pursuing Master’s in Electrical Engineering from Cal Poly SLO and NYU. I have tried searching about the reviews regarding the graduate program in Cal Poly SLO but i end up getting reviews for under graduate programs (which are positive). And i have read NYU’s engineering programs are good too. That’s why I’m in a fix.

So i would like to know:

 1. How is the graduate program for engineering in Cal Poly SLO as compared to NYU poly ?
 2. How feasible is it to live off-campus in respective places ?
 3. And how is it for international students (we are non US residents), read that the percentage is less compared to other universities ?

She is leaning towards Cal Poly because of the location and reviews about under graduations, but i don’t want her to miss out on a better engineering college just because of that.

Any help and information provided regarding graduate programs for these colleges is appreciated.

Thanks a lot, have a nice day.

This is a very difficult comparison. NYU Poly is very urban, Cal Poly is in a lovely small to mid sized coastal community. The weather is consistent in SLO, not so much in NYC. They are on opposite coasts, so getting opinions from engineers who know both will be unlikely. Lastly, Cal Poly does not, by design, have doctorate programs, so they are ranked in a different category than NYU Poly. The biggest disadvantage to SLO would be the lack of opportunity to convert to a PhD program. It MIGHT be a possibility at NYU. It won’t be at Cal Poly. Otherwise, for me, I’d choose Cal Poly.

@eyemgh, thanks a lot for your reply. Cleared out couple of things, really appreciated.

If it helps, Cal Poly was just ranked best Masters University in the West (of the US) for the 21st consecutive year by US News.

@eyemgh Wow! that i had no idea about. Yes that kind of cements the decision i guess, will let her know, she’ll be happy she was leaning towards right college  thanks for info.
