Cal Poly SLO vs. Oregon State University Industrial Engineering

Might be an obvious choice for some but I am seriously stressing over what college is right for Industrial engineering major. Any students from either have any input? Cost is not the main issue. I live in the Portland area and fear missing family and friends in California. Also am already accepted into the MECOP program at OSU which means I have two 6 month internships during my junior and senior years of school, which are still more than two years away. Also wondering what I should consider besides the basic knowledge that cal poly is more prestigious and has better education. Any input welcome!!!

My son was a MECOP direct admit for ME, but chose Cal Poly. He’s now finishing his MS and will certainly have a good job, doing something he likes once he’s done. That said, I would not say Cal Poly is better than OSU. It’s different. Very different. Classes will be smaller at CP. There will be more labs. The beach is closer and warmer and you’ll start in major from day one. You won’t have the advantage of MECOP though. CP will be more money. OSU’s honors program can offset most of the class size stuff. For engineers, it’s the best honors program we encountered…bar none. Some companies, Boeing for example, recruit OSU harder. For him, in the end, it was more about weather than prestige. If OSU speaks to you, choose OSU. Just understand that they are different.

@eyemgh thank you for submitting such a balanced and excellent overview for the OP.

That’s the type of advice we should all strive to deliver.

OP. Not sure you’ll get better advice

than what eyemgh gave to you. Imho.

Thanks for the advice so much! That definitely helps
