Cal Poly SLO vs Pomona

I'm a Filipino Las Vegan looking at going to college in Cali for Civil Engineering. I already have my UCI, SDSU and SJSU on my list. But one thing I want to decide between is if Cal Poly San Luis Obispo or Pomona is a better fit for me. Can anyone give me some details and help sway me? Thanks!

CPSLO is generally more selective (though selectivity at each varies by major), in a more rural area (with ocean and mountain activities not that far away), and probably more of a “college experience”. CPP is in more of an urban area and appears to have a much higher proportion of commuter students (50% of frosh living on campus, versus 97% for CPSLO).

CPP does have a four year graduation pledge plan (if you come in not needing remedial courses and follow your major’s course plan, they pledge to get you into the courses you need to graduate on time, though it is not obvious if this is really as much of an issue at CPP as typically feared), although its actual four year graduation rate is low.

You probably have to ask each school’s housing departments if vegan meal options beyond salad bars and fruit are readily available in the dining halls.

Oh UCbalumnus! You misunderstand, I’m a high school student from Las Vegas, Nevada haha but thanks for the feedback! I am highly attracted to an urban setting which would be Pomona but SLO is better academically by far also.

If you are attracted to urban settings, you need to look at urban UC’s like Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Diego etc(if you can handle the cost). However, in this case I recommend Cal Poly SLO over Pomona even though you like urban. Yes, SLO is that much better.

Don’t forget to apply to your state university, Iowa State and SUNY’s. They are fairly cheap for out of state students.

I would highly recommend SLO over Pomona if you plan on majoring in engineering.

If cost is an issue, take a look at the Western Undergraduate Exchange which offers reduced tuition. See [Western Undergraduate Exchange](Tips For Students | Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)) Unfortunately the UC schools do not participate, its just CSU schools and the various campuses allow different majors

Thanks everyone!

@mikemac, I know all about WUE but unfortunately neither of the Cal Polys participate. Only Cal State with Civil Engineering and WUE that catches my eye is Sacramento State

@khan, Really? I’ll take note of that if quality and academics is what I’m looking for

@Xtremepower, the UCs are nearly unreachable for me in terms of price and Irvine is my dream school so I’ll just keep UCs to one. Another vote for SLO! I have been looking at Stony Brook University but I don’t know much about the price much for OOS

Stony Brook costs are here:
[Tuition and Fee Rates - Bursar/Student Accounts - Stony Brook University](http://www.stonybrook.edu/bursar/tuition/tuition-and-fee-rates.shtml)
Note that these are per semester, and you have to add up the tuition, fees, room, board, etc. that you find there.

Wow! Stony Brook is about 11 k for tuition for OOS? Not bad!

That’s per semester, not per academic year. Don’t forget to add room and board as well. Still one of the less expensive state universities for out-of-state students.

Others include North Carolina State, Virginia Tech, Iowa State, South Dakota State, South Dakota Mines, and New Mexico Mines.

You can also check your stats against the schools with your major and http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1348012-automatic-full-tuition-full-ride-scholarships-17.html#post15743177</a> .
