Cal Poly SLO vs Rose Hulman vs MSOE

My daughter has applied to Computer Engineering Major in Cal Poly SLO, Rose Hulman, Milwaukee School of Engineering.
We like them because of their (A) small class sizes (B) Only professors teach and not teaching assistants © Better student to professor ratio (D) Direct admission to the major.(E) Small schools with focus on engineering.
We would not get in state tuition at Cal Poly
So the fees would be roughly the same at all 3.
She got provisional admission at Cal Poly and MSOE. We dont know the decision at Rose yet.
We like all 3.
Cal Poly would be good from a weather point of view, closer to silicon valley. I have read good things about MSOE as well Rose in regards to job placements.
One of the things I heard about Cal Poly is that there is no curving in grades (GPA might suffer). Not sure about Rose and MSOE in this regard.
What are the other things that you can share that will help us in the decision. Any pros and cons of each of the Universities

Posted in wrong thread. Apologize for that. I dont know how to delete and post in the right group.

Not sure how she got an admission from Cal Poly SLO since decisions do not start posting until February and the application period closes today. Are you sure that it is only an acknowledgement of receiving the application and setting up the student portal?

DECISION TIMELINE:
All applicants will be notified of their admission status by April 1st.

• International (or internationally educated) students must have all required documents submitted by the deadline
of March 1st, in order to receive an admissions review and timely decision.

I will let a moderator know about moving your thread.

I think it would be very difficult to top RHIT for your daughter’s academic interests.

Hi there:
Yes she got an admission decision.

Dear Gayatri,

We are pleased to offer you conditional admission to Cal Poly in Computer Engineering for the fall 2019 quarter. You were selected from a large pool of academically accomplished students who applied for admission in the fall. On behalf of all of us here at Cal Poly, congratulations!

Congratulations on her acceptances.

Cal Poly should have excellent job placement.

I would consider how easy it would be for your D to travel home. None of the 3 are near major airports. I’d also consider where your D wants to end up after she graduates.

Travelling is also not a consideration for us. She should have a good learning experience and enjoy the course work

Grading is variable within the college of engineering at Cal Poly from the easiest, Aerospace where close to 90% of all letter grades given are A or B, to ME, the hardest, where only 60% get A or B, and over 10% get Fs. CompE falls roughly in the middle with most other engineering majors with 75% A or B. Curving is up to individual professors. That said, anyone with good organization, mental horsepower, and work ethic can get good grades. Our son finished with a 3.7 in ME.

Our son chose CP for all the same reasons you listed. I prefer the location to Milwaukee or Terre Haute. The biggest advantage though over the other two is that the engineering department only makes up 25% of the student body. She’ll be among a very diverse bunch of majors.

I agree with @Gumbymom. An acceptance at this point has never happened in previous years. Maybe they changed things this year. She did apply to Cal Poly and not Cal Poly Pomona, correct?

An admission decision from Cal Poly this early? That is unusual. Last year, a few admissions were sent in January, but most were sent in late Feb. The letter looks similar to last year’s though:

"Dear xxx,

We are pleased to offer you conditional admission to Cal Poly in Computer Science for the fall 2018 quarter. You were selected from a record pool of over 65,000 academically accomplished students who applied for admission in the fall. On behalf of all of us here at Cal Poly, congratulations!
"

So, maybe they really have changed to rolling admissions?

What does conditional acceptance mean for Cal poly?

@marinebioslo: It means you meet all requirements stated in the link. All schools will accept an applicant provisionally and if they do not meet the contract requirements, their acceptance could be rescinded.

Is your daughter by chance applying as an international student? That may explain the early acceptance.

I was thinking the same thing and was also about to ask ^^^^. I know some International applicants heard early last year.

I know rose is a super school but hard to say no to cal poly in state. I wouldn’t.

It appears the OP would be out of state for Cal Poly.

(The OP’s daughter, of course.)

@merc81 Thx. I totally missed that. Either school would be a high end election. Best of luck with decision OP

We applied as US citizen but they considered her as out of state (probably international as well). She is a US citizen studying in India but I work in California and have been paying taxes for past 12 years.

We have not heard from Rose yet but MSOE accepted her but again we heard from the admissions counsellor but not in writing. He called my daughter to inform that she was accepted. When we check msoe and its reviews it seems to be nice and we like it. But are concerned that not many people know about it. It is not about prestige or social status but when she graduates potential employers should know about the University

I may be biased, but out these 3 schools, I would advise my own kid to choose Calpoly in a heartbeat.
