I'm gonna decide tomorrow that I'm going to apply ED.

My top competitors are Santa Clara & USD. I'm majoring in business.

Cal Poly:

-Cheaper
-Kids seemed similar to me
-Beautiful Location
-Great Business Program
-Hands on Learning (fits my personality)
-fun school, but not a super party school (which i like - i like that its still a fun campus without a super party scene, as compared to like sdsu, or ucsb - im not that much of a partier, but do like to pary a bit..)
-Goal to produce career oriented business people (very little liberal arts / character)
-Big Campus (I prefer)
-Laid back

Santa Clara & University of San Diego:

-Business programs ranked slightly higher
-Over 2x as expensive (my parrents have the money, but still..)
-Snobby / Rich / Stylish Kids
-College designed not only to produce a business person, but also to produce character / sprituality (important)
-Beautiful locations
-Small campus

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna ED for SLO. 95% sure. But would anyone like to provide some counter arguments before I make my final choice? The only big thing I see really is that SLO is just producing business people, while the others focus more on producing character aswell. Other than that, SLO looks perfect for me. Any thoughts / arguments before I submit the ED to SLO?

Also, would anyone like to make a counterargument for business schools in about the same range admissions wise?? I figure I'd be regected easily at Berk and USC, and barely any UCs have business. id like to stay in CA, but am maybe considering miami.

Apply to Cal Poly SLO. You think you’d be comfortable there, you think you’d find friends there, it has the big campus you want. Don’t second-guess yourself.

You don’t have to do business right away; most do economics then work then do MBA. For that reason, you could apply Economics to Berkeley, then apply to Haas for junior year.

I don’t think Santa Clara has a preppy reputation, certainly not as extreme as San Diego, and I think it’s ability to place graduates in a wealth of Silicon Valley companies due to its local reputation is very good.

I don’t really know Cal Poly’s business program that well, so can’t offer comparative.

and im pretty sure i couldn’t get accepted to ucsd, ucla, or berk, id maybe be able to make ucsb uci or ucd, maybe tho, my stats are just okay…

My older D is at LMU, which is comparable in terms of culture/spirit to Santa Clara. She’s getting a very fine education (not business), but I don’t see it as doing a whole lot for character, unless you get involved in the service organizations, which are very competitive to get into. She got a wonderful, rounded character education at her high school.

I think very highly of SLO and tried to get her to apply there (good ed school), but she had her heart set on LMU and applied ED there. Everyone I know who went to SLO got a very good education. You can’t beat what you get for the money there. If you make an effort to get involved in community service, you’ll be good.

OK if you are looking to apply ED you need to be sure. Sure is not= to asking relative strangers to help you make up your mind. That said I can giveyou some insight on two of the campuses relative to your perceived impressions.

So, if you ar looking for a connection to your Catholic faith you can get that at CPSLO so don’t let that be a factor. They have a VERY active Newman club which carts kids to Mass.

Don’t know much about USD but SCU is charming. My perception of it when I toured with my girls is that it offers an open, friendly environment. It didn’t present as a snobby school at all. thumper1 has a D who is a student there and she may visit this thread and provide addititonal insight. But I wouldn’t cross it off your list based on unfounded snobbieness.

slo actually has a rather good business program.

thanks, im consideing lmu too, but i think slo and the others mentioned wold be beter. glad to hear what u said tho.

kk, thanks. ya im 95% sure now, but still not positive, so im not going to do it at the moment. but i am considering since the deadline is saturday. thats why im doing all the research i can. thanks tho.

I would not advocate one over the other. It really depends on you. You seem set on business, but I will say, if you are not 100% sure what you want to study, a liberal arts school like USD might be better than Cal Poly. Although my son loves Cal Poly, he almost transferred to USD because he had doubts about his major, and thought he might like to study business (he’s not in the business school). Although you can change majors at Cal Poly, there is a process to follow, and some changes are easier than others. One advantage of USD (and many other schools too) is you don’t have to declare a major right away – you take a variety of courses, fulfill your distribution requirements, and then decide what you want to major in as an upperclassman.

kk thanks. im pretty confident i want to major in business. cal poly is a plus and minus for me in that fashion. i learn better from project / real world stuff, which is why cal poly seems perfect for me. but then on the other hand, its all business, and just traning you to be a worker bee business man, while usd would prepare me more well - roundedly. but itd be over 2x in price and more reading / writing learning rather than projects. and im not too keen on reading / writing learning.

thanks for the input tho! everyone whos gone there seems to love it. ;D best of lukc with your son.

3.3 unweighted - 3.45 cal state / uc weighted “AG” - 3.65 weighted (9-11 weighting all honors classes) (yeah… not too great)

1400 SAT (M + CR) (I think this would really help me for SLO) - 2010 SAT

moderately difficult, lots of honors, 3 APs total in hs

good ECs

since cal poly slo basically only uses sat and gpa. i figured my gpa is 10% lower than their average, and my sat is 10% higher than their average. so i have a good shot i think.

I was going to say: if you don’t think you can get into UCB or UCLA then what makes you think you’ll get into Poly? But I now see your reasoning and I say: go to Poly. I did and loved it. ---- Of course that was 100 years ago :)

My friend’s DS graduated from CalPoly SLO in business …4 (maybe 3) years ago. He got a great job right out of school in SF. He has switched jobs now, got his CPA while working, and is now applying for MBA at Berkley. He’ll get in.

He found that his courses left him better prepared for his first job than several of the other new-hires from “better” schools. Maybe it was the person, maybe it was the school.

Anyway, he had a great time in school, the right mix of work/play as you’ve seen. I think he’d recommend CalPoly.

Definitely apply but Cal Poly and the other CSUs are getting tougher to get into. There is another thread about this somewhere…what is your backup plan?

SCU and USD have EA, not ED. SCU deadline is November 1 and USD is November 15. Cal Poly has ED…it’s the only one of the three that is ED (that would be BINDING acceptance)…deadline is October 31.

Here is my opinion…if you are still waffling about the decision of which school to apply to ED/EA…none of them is FAR AND AWAY the number one school for you. That being the case, I would advise you to apply EA to USD and SCU and RD to Cal Poly.
