Hi everyone, I am looking to be "chanced" for Cal Poly SLO. My CSU GPA is 3.71 and I am applying for the College of Engineering there. I just talked to an admissions adviser and he said that the average GPA of an Engineer is 4.01 so I am sort of worried. He also said that SAT reading + math is about 1300 (I got 1090, I am retaking) and ACT of 31 (I got a 27, not sure if I'll retake)

English 9 Honors: B both semesters
Honors Biology: B first semester, A second

^Same for sophomore except bio is chem, and English 9 honors is English 10 honors

Junior:
Advanced Science topics = A both semesters
Bioengineering = A both semesters
AP Biology = B both semesters (got a 4)

Senior:
AP Psychology
AP US Government and Politics
AP Chemistry

They don't check senior grades, just classes.

I have about 56 hours of volunteer time at the library and at least another 20 hours doing precinct walks for political campaigns over the years. I have been playing sax for about 9 years, and I have taken private lessons all 9 years too. I have been section leader for saxophone for 3 years at high school in all bands, wind ensemble, Jazz Band and marching band.

Just let me know if there is stuff to improve on, like SAT scores etc. Or chance me too :D Thanks

Cal Poly SLO will be a challenge for you – BUT apply anyway. You could get in. The school prefers the ACT, so retake it if you can. My kid is studying engineering there now and most of his classmates are in the range that the admissions adviser told you. No joke, a GPA of 4.01, SAT scores at 1300 and an ACT of 31 really is the average. My kid’s stats were even higher than that. Cal Poly SLO is now taking away students from the top UC’s. My kid and several of his buddies turned down UCLA, UCSD and UCSB for Cal Poly SLO.

So apply anyway and hope for the best. They do accept about 25% of applicants. Applying for early decision might increase your chances a bit. What about Cal Poly Pomona? They have a very similar program and you would be a match for them. They offer some of the very same majors and there are lots of opportunities for internships and jobs at that school too. In fact, JPL and So Cal Edison hire a lot of Cal Poly Pomona grads. Keep your options open. You can still be an engineer, just choose a few more schools too.

I’m applying to Cal Poly as well, I just know a lot about the school because i’ve loved it for years.

1st, are you in state or out of state? If by some chance you are out of state, it can help your chances slightly.
You should definitely retake the sat, maybe try the act if you have time.
Since cal poly only looks at gpa and standardized test scores, you should really work on getting your score up so your gpa doesn’t matter quite as much!

and ps, they do not prefer act or sat. ask any admission counselor, they will take either score and will not base admissions decisions on what test you took.

@mkonjibhu – Great advice for the OP. I’ve seen your posts before and your contributions are always helpful. The school does accept both the ACT and the SAT. However, the ACT is their preferred exam. Please see the attached video taken from the Cal Poly web site for clarification:

Thanks guys for the help. I am in-state so I already took a tour of the engineering college there and I loved it. It’s my kind of level. Hard, but not too difficult like a UC, but I am always up for a challenge I talked to a friend who is at Cal Poly, and he said you should be fine as long as the standardized test scores are higher. He got a 30 and got accepted so there has to be variation for an average.

Bump here. I have a feeling I will be able to get my ACT score up by December. I took the last ACT in June of last school year. At the time I didn’t even know what trig was and nearly all of geometry, but after a semester in advanced math (semester of trig and a semester of pre-calc) I seem to be really good at trig even though I got C’s bothe semester wen I was in Geometry and Algebra 2. ANYWAY, I am hoping for better math and reading scores this time around. What would be my chances if I scores, let’s say, a 29, 30 or higher?

I’m applying to Cal Poly SLO! I received a 2110 (1410 CR+M) and a 3.95 CP GPA. I’m applying to Civil Engineering. Just crossing my fingers at this point. Good luck everyone.

@Scozzar You should definitely apply, there aren’t even any essays, just input your stats online at CSUMentor. I’m applying to Cal Poly SLO too. =)

What specific engineering major? Have you taken pre-calc, calculus, or statistics? How many years of FL, English, and VPA did you take? Each of these factors matter. Also, what did you score on the specific portions of the SAT and ACT. Cal Poly will take the Reading and Math from the SAT and the English and Math from the ACT. They will also super-score.
