I am an out of state student and I am trying to decide between these two schools as a mechanical engineer. I am aware of the price difference but I was wondering if any students who were accepted to both schools found strong deciding factors for Cal Poly. Does anyone have advice?

Well if you are out of state, you probably already know this, but price will probably be a factor to consider

Both are great schools, I had to make this decision myself (as an instate student for computer science though). I think it boils down to where do you see yourself at in 4 years.

I chose Cal Poly Slo for its very strong undergraduate program in which I knew after graduation I would be able to find a job in the computer science field. I saw myself in 4 years working already, satisfied with a B.S. I could always just go back and get that M.S. or P.H.d later if i really wanted to, but I prefer working right after undergraduate and slowly getting those degrees. If thats how you are too then Cal Poly Slo is where you want to go. (Of course I am kind of summing up multiple multiple MULTIPLE factors you should consider, but i think it ultimately boils down to this disregarding useless things and given both are excellent schools)

But if you see yourself in 4 years chasing after a M.S. and eventually P.H.D UC Davis is where you want to go. UC undergraduate program are usually just bridges you take to ease your way into graduate studies. Thats great for some, others, not so much. If you do take this road you will probably have a very successful career after graduation as UC Davis graduates command a high salary.

Of course there are other things to consider as I have mentioned, but really, both are very good schools, its more of a where do you want to spend the next 4 years of your life at and would you prefer 4 years of a practical study or 4 years of theoretical study.

Gl. You could always just flip a coin and before the coin drops if you find yourself hoping it lands on one side more than the other, thats where you want to go.

Thanks, I will definitely take that into consideration. I have visited cal poly multiple times and I’m visiting davis next week so hopefully i’ll be able to figure it out then.

Hello!
I’m going through the same dilemma also except it’s concerned with the Biological Sciences at Cal Poly and the Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior Major at Davis. Let me know how everything goes!

After visiting Davis I finally decided to go to Cal Poly. It is half the price for me since I’m out of state and i felt as though I would get a better education for undergrad engineering. Davis is awesome though. They are really supportive in just about every aspect of student life. I would definitely consider it for graduate school. Good luck on your decision!

Thanks! After I visited Cal Poly’s Open House a couple of days ago, I decided that UC Davis was the school for me. ahah.

Good luck with everything, hope you enjoy the beautiful city! Especially the beaches! (;
