So I'm looking through the checklist on the admission homepage and I see that registering for CalSo is an ASAP item. I'm kind of confused as to what CalSo really is. Is it just a huge orientation where you sign up for classes and meeting other people in your respective major and is kind of mandatory? or is it just an optional get-together where going doesn't really make a difference?

If it is an orientation to help sign up for classes, would it be better to sign up for one of the earlier days or does it not matter because i heard that signing up for classes are hard due to the large number of people trying to get in.

I'm just totally confused and my parents just keep bugging me about it (:
Thanks everyone!

Sunshineday, I am a freshman too. To us, Calso is the only way to get the first few classes (upto 10.5 units of PH 1). For now, you can’t do anything about getting your classes.

Also, you have to plan a tentative program of all the classes you intend to take, perhaps all 4 years (I am not sure about the 4 years, someone let us know), and backups if the ones you want are already full.

Go thru all the Calso FAQs - it’s quite explanatory.

It’s not mandatory to attend Calso (you just have to state on the link that “I can’t make it”). They will send you infoto register for your classes (unfortunately after all the ones who are going to Calso are done) in July. I don’t know if I would take this option - especially if you are local and not OOS or international.

Sign up for an earlier day if you’re going!
It really is just a huge orientation, but it was kinda fun. You have to hope for a good group though. (My group was so quiet and I was the only loud/faux excited one because I felt bad for my counselor. She personally thanked me before the groups were free to do whatever they want. lmao)
But it’s not mandatory, and hell you might just save that much amount of money. I don’t know if not going puts you at a disadvantage to signing up for classes. In fact, you’ll probably end up beating the kids who go in July, though this is just my guess…

It’s also I guess a good way to get a feel of Unit 3 dorm/dorms in general and what you might bring. Lastly, good way to be forced to meet people haha. But I pretty much forgot everyone as soon as I flew back home.

^ is suit up suppose to be reference to barney?

Um yea. go to calso. it’s fun. you’ll meet lots of people that you’ll probably never talk to again unless you guys live in same building. you’ll save money by going because you’ll get better classes so you don’t have to stay an extra year.
