Cal State Chico - Campus Life/Surrounding Area

Hey Guys,
I'm really interested in attending Chico, it has the courses I'm after. But I'm kind of reluctant due to the remoteness of the area. So I was wondering if anyone could shed some light as to what it's like. Will I get bored living on campus? Is there much to do in the surrounding area? Etc...

Have you visited the school? If not, you should seriously consider it

It is a small town, but Chico is a nice college town.

One of the largest party schools in the U.S. (not an exaggeration). Now I don’t know if that’s something you enjoy but if it is, you won’t be bored. I live about an hour from Chico State and almost transferred there. Beautiful campus, and a very college-like feel all around the city. What are your other options?

Frankly, isn’t any school a party school? I know Chico has had a reputation, but I can think of so many other schools that might be just the same, such as UC Davis, etc

Agree w crizello. Go visit Chico - you will like it or not.

If you are looking for a metropolitan area with major league sports, big name concerts and first rate shopping, you’ll hate it. There is plenty to do on - and off campus. Mountain biking, hiking, fishing, watersport opportunities abound. Lassen National Park isn’t too far and a great backpacking destination. If you are really ambitious, there’s always flying lessons at the local airport (there’s a little one about a mile from campus and another just N of town).

Most of the students live within a few miles of campus so, there’s always something going on. That said, it isn’t the party school it used to be. SDSU and UCSB have definitely taken that mantle. There have been some high profile alcohol related deaths at Chico over the past couple of years. The school has made changes (including disbanding the Greek system) that will surely tone things down.

It is also home to Sierra Nevada brewery, my personal favorite.

True Story, one of my friends heard of it via the show, Workaholics, went and visited. Ended up loving it, one of his favorite things about the school is the relatively remote location.

@Matty77 I’m applying to chico next year, I was wondering what gpa and test scores you had during high school to get admitted?

Like all the CSUs but SLO, Chico uses only the CSU Eligibiltiy index to determine your fate. GPAx800+ SAT (math and reading) They say they cut this year around 3600-3700.

For your GPA, its just Sophomore and Jr years for your college qualifying (a-g as they call them) courses only.

So, if you have better than a 3.2 CSU GPA and 1100/1600 SAT you are probably in.

Lots more info on the index here:

My S is a freshman and he turned down higher ranked schools (wanted to graduate debt free and not be just a number) but he’s been very happy with his choice. Great college town, small student body and caring profs. He has been given some great ops and really shines there, whereas at a bigger name school, he might’ve gotten lost in the fray.

But downside is, no airport or mass transit, no parking so taking a car is out and yes, the revellers can be distracting. You have to rise above to succeed. Go to Choose Chico! event and my bet is you will too!

So far Chico is In the running for my D. I love the campus, she wishes it were smaller. But it has the type of program that she wants and I think would be a good fit.

With its gorgeous brick buildings, a river that runs through it and boasting a 125 year tradition, one of the oldest in the state, Chico’s a great value and many are recognizing this fact. Chico State gives priority to north cal and after that it gets a bit more selective among the CSUs.
