I have applied to California State University, East Bay and have been accepted. I honestly really want to go here, just not sure if it is right for me. Is it a good school, would any recommend this university?
CSU East Bay, located in Hayward, is generally thought of to be a commuter school. No real community outside of any organizations you may join. If that’s something you care about when choosing a university, you may want to look elsewhere.
notalreadyinuse is correct that CSU EB is primarily a commuter school, but it ihas excellent instruction, particularly for the more hands-on practical majors, such as teaching, business/accounting, psych and social sciences.
Be sure to check out the department that you’ve been accepted to. If you’re more interested in CS or more theoretical majors, than you should do an even closer inspection – talk to the professors and find out about the levels of advising, particularly if yours is a major that will require a MA degree.
I live about 7 hours away from cal state east bay and i want an experience since it is by the bay. Academically, is it good school in the departments of Political science or History?
i got accepted into other schools however, they are close to home. Not sure if i want to go far away or stay close.
Being a resident student at a mostly commuter school may not give you the “residential college experience” as much as at a mostly residential school. However, if you can find your own social life in the area, that may be fine for you.
You can check each school’s course catalog and schedule to see its offerings in your areas of interest.
I just want to know weather it is a good school academically.
I wanna leave far at the moment to be isolated and just be new. Have a new start and work my way up with people and the school.
Without knowing which other schools you are considering, it is tough to give much perspective. I totally get wanting a change of scenery. CSU EB isn’t your classic destination school, meaning most students have local family. I haven’t seen the dorms so, i can’t really comment on that.
The weather is fine and the school is good.
Tour the campus and see what you think.
Thanks !
East Bay is not one of the big schools in the CSU system, but it does have its own hidden gems. I came here as a grad student for the Anthropology program (’94-’96) and returned in 2000 where I continue to help run their museum. If you like a quiet campus it’s good, and its location above the bay makes for a great view. You can take BART to go to San Francisco or Berkeley, but that takes time and coordination.
As for academics… from Public History majors in the museum classes, I hear the History program is pretty rigorous. In Poly Sci there is also an internship program available for students. I’ve seen some students skate by without doing much work, but most professors are good and committed to helping students. You can learn a lot if you are interested in investing in your education by going to office hours and putting your effort into assignments.
You should check it out on Welcome Day (4/18) - http://www20.csueastbay.edu/events/welcome-day/
