Cal State Long Beach- GPA to get accepted?

Anyone know what GPA Cal State Long Beach generally accepts? I have heard people get accepted with 2.6-3.4. Can anyone share experiences or possibly know of someone who attends?

My GPA isn't the greatest and I'm trying to get an idea of my chances.

I heard average was 3.40 or so.

If you are from the CSULB service area you can probably get in with a high 2.X. Outside the service area you likely need something north of 3.5. It will also depend on your intended major.

What do you mean by service area? Like surrounding area? Or like schools they have have agreements with?

Cal States often have agreements with high schools in their general area that specifies if a student has a some minimum GPA and they apply to their school they are accepted automatically. No SAT/ACT required.

My son’s high school is in the Cal State Fullerton service area. The agreement with his high school is for a minimum 2.8 GPA. Many students use this as a safety.

Your GC should no if one exists between your HS and a Cal State.

I’m from the SF Bay Area and have a high 2.x GPA, with a legit ACT score 28-32, would I have a chance to get in for Film?

hey pshh,
i had the same idea as you, however I was a bit late to jump on the CSULB bandwagon (let alone hear about the school), so I think if anything i’ll apply as a transfer. I’m interested in film, but I’m not sure how my app is going to be processed as an out of stater. As far as stats go, I’m the opposite as you; bit higher GPA, lower SAT score. Go film!

i think for all CalState schools it should be 2.5 or better. thats what they told me anyway. theres other colleges that will consider you for admission with worse GPAs though. good luck :)

Google the common data set for CSULB 2008-2009 to find the average gpa of admitted students last year. www.http://campus-sas.csulb.edu/IRpdfreports/CDS%202008_2009.pdf

GPA’s:

3.5 - 3.7 22.6%
3.25 - 3.49 28.5%
3.0 - 3.2 21.5%
2.5 - 2.99 12%

So this will tell you the average GPA of admitted students and also their average SAT scores.

Good luck!

You can also find a list of “service areas” online, but it’s hard to find.

Sammy, your information is irrelevant

While the official statistics haven’t officially been compiled yet, the CSU system has reported a record number of total applications for the Fall 2010 semester, with more than 609,000. CSULB received over 71,000 of those applications, the most of any campus in the system and a new school record. CSULB also drew the greatest number of first-time freshman applicants (47,683) and transfer student applicants (21,973) of any CSU campus.[29] Due to the ongoing state-wide budget deficit, only an estimated 5,500 (7.7%) will be offered admission, much less than in recent school history.[30]

you need a bit more now to get in. I have a 3.5, I’m in the local area and I’m a transfer student… I don’t think I’ll get in.

I’m from Long Beach City College, it’s sister school which is suppose to accept their students and I have a 3.0 and I’m going to school to become a teacher. I was denied. I also applied to Cal State Fullerton, was denied. I called and the admin lady stated that anyone below a 3.7 was denied.
Good Luck.

I had no idea that competition for acceptance to CSUs had become so fierce and I am a little worried. My son will be a high school senior this year and plans to apply to CSU Sacramento as a freshman for the Fall 2011 semester. He did not apply himself his Freshmen, Sophmore and first term of his Junior year and as a result has a GPA of only about 3.0. He really does not have enough time left to raise his GPA before the CSU Sacramento admission deadline. He did take the SATs his Junior year and had scores of CR 660 and Math 720 for a total of 1,380/1,600 and wants to major in Physics or Chemistry. Does anyone know what relative weight CSUs give to GPA vs SAT scores? Can relatively good SAT scores overcome what now seems to be a mediocre GPA for Freshmen applicants to a CSU? His high school is in the Sac State service area.

Lemaitre1: I’ve been researching the CSU’s for my D and spending alot of time on CSU Mentor site, plus visiting a few campuses. Your son is in the Sac service area so Sac State would be more lenient on the GPA- and his SATs are above their norm, so my guess is he’s good to go. Some campuses have become harder to get into, but that is mostly for the out-of-service-area kids, and also elevated more if they want entre to the impacted programs. Your kid sounds smart enough (SAT’s), and I bet with the ability to take classes of his choosing he’ll enjoy the college experience. I used to bug my son about H.S. grades, but told him once he went to college I was done nagging- at that point he’s building his own life. (OK, I still bug him a little bit  )
