Cal State Northridge vs. Cal State Fullerton

I have several friends seriously considering CSUN which is a BA theater/MT Minor. How would this likely compare to say Marymount Manhattan which is also a BA/Mt Minor? And why would a BFA at middle to bottom of the pack talked about here make more sense than a very affordable state school with a decent program?

CSUF is the go-to CA program, along with UCI and UCLA but it has a severe cut system and the other 2 require higher stats. Thanks.

I don’t really know anything at the CSUN theatre program. My D is graduating from Marymount next month with her BA Theatre/MT. Although they call the MT a minor at the school it is really more of a major with the number of classes you take. I think the difference at a school like MMC is all of my D’s theatre classes only had 8-12 students in them versus a California State School which is likely to have much larger classes. Even in her non theatre classes my D has never had more than 15 students.

I am not sure, but it doesn’t look like the CSUN program requires many dance classes, and what is offered is more movement. Their dance program is part of their Kinesiology Dept., so I am not sure if there is much of an emphasis on it for the MT minor. I do know they have a wonderful VP program but am not sure how they incorporate voice into their MT minor. Are regular voice lessons included in the program? If not, you are in a prime location to find excellent voice instructors, (and dance studios for that matter), but you should consider the extra expense.

Don’t know much about how the programs compare, but Diane Ketchie-Saar is one of the VP faculty involved with the MT minor at CSUN, and she is wonderful. She was in the SF company of “Phantom” and has other MT and opera credits. She still performs nationally and she also teaches voice to professionals and students through her private studio in LA. I know she’s very popular with her CSUN students.

I will add this – in terms of TV work, CSUN Theatre program has a very well-connected network of alumni who get steady work in the LA area.
