How many Cal States have direct entry Nursing programs?
SDSU and Cal State Fullerton are the only CSU’s with direct entry Nursing programs. UCI/UCLA/Dominican University/Azusa Pacific and the University of San Francisco also offer direct entry programs. Arizona State also has a very good direct entry program and less competitive than the California programs.
When i apply to a University and its Direct Entry Nursing Program as well, is it possible for me to still get accepted into their university but not into the direct entry nursing program? If so, does that apply to every university with a direct entry program? If that happens, can i still take my pre reqs there as/for my Nursing major?
For SDSU, if you do not get into the direct entry Nursing, you cannot get into SDSU as a Pre-Nursing major and take the Pre-req’s. For SDSU, you either get accepted as in-coming Freshman or reapply as a transfer student from a community college or another 4 year university.
CSUF will accept you into the school as another major other than Pre-Nursing, allow to take the Pre-Req classes and then reapply to the Nursing program.
UCI can accept you into the University into another major, allow you to take the Pre-req classes and then you would reapply.
UCLA is similar to SDSU, in that they only consider your primary major: Nursing and if you do not get accepted, you can attend another school to complete your Pre-Req’s and reapply as a transfer applicant.
So, for the schools that have direct entry programs, will i get 2 acceptance/decline letters? one that says if i got accepted to the school or not, and one that says if i got accepted into their nursing program or not?
Only one acceptance/rejection email will be sent and decisions posted on your school portal.
For SDSU, you will get an email indicating acceptance/rejection for Nursing.
For CSUF, you will an email with an acceptance into the School of Nursing or be given admission to the university as Undeclared. Just noticed they updated some information and will not consider an alternate major.
For UCI, you will get an acceptance into the School of Nursing or be given admission to your alternate major.
Ohh, so if i get accepted, the email will say what major i got accepted to the school for?
and for CSUF, if i got accepted and choose to go to the school, what will happen next if i go in as Undeclared? will i still be able to take the pre-reqs needed for my nursing major and then apply to nursing school during my sophomore year?
if accepted as my alternate major, can i still take pre-reqs needed for nursing even if I’m not attending the school as a nursing major?
This is so confusing, i never thought it would be this difficult.
If accepted Undeclared or alternate major, you can take the nursing pre-req’s and then apply. The email will state which major you have been accepted into at each school.
Will that take longer than being accepted into direct entry or pre-nursing/undeclared with an interest in nursing? Or do all 4 take the same amount of time for a BSN?
Is pre-nursing and undeclared with an interest in nursing (undeclared-nursing) the same thing???
Direct entry programs usually take 4 years. 2+2 programs can take longer if you are unable to get into all the required classes needed to apply for the nursing programs. Pre-Nursing and/or Undeclared-interest in Nursing are basically the same thing. You are not a “nursing student” but taking classes to apply to nursing school. Each campus may have different major designations for the same thing.
From the SDSU website:
Freshman applicants must apply to San Diego State University using the CSU Mentor application and select “Nursing (BS)” as their intended major at the time of application. Incoming freshmen applicants are admitted directly to the School of Nursing to accommodate the new 4-year, 120 unit curriculum.
CSU Fullerton has a 4 year or 5 year plan:

UCI’s program is 4 years:

As a senior in high school applying to college in the fall, will each University website have instructions if you want to apply as a Nursing major/pre-nursing?
Yes, just google each school’s Nursing program information. Admission instructions will be posted on the website. All CSU’s will use the CSU Mentor application and several schools will have supplementals you will also need to fill out. Most of the information I have linked to you has been from the school’s websites.
