I'm still waiting for HSHSP and UFlorida SSTP (both of which I have a higher chance than at YESS because I'm an Asian male). However, I may not get into HSHSP because the post office returned the envelope because I covered the stamp up with tape - and it said "stamp void when coated" so I turned it in again, after the postmark deadline. :(

SIMUW (Summer Institute of Mathematics at the UWashington) accepted me however, and I am almost certain I am going there. As I am also going to the University of Washington next year, SIMUW will help me get acquainted with the university and its professors.

If you have already been accepted to SIMUW, why are you so obsessed with CalTech YESS?/quote]

Where did you get the impression I was obsessed with the program? I wasn't obsessed, I merely applied to the program and others may find it useful information that I have been rejected.

You certainly seem to be obsessed with the possibility of rejection. If you get it, be cool with it. If you don't get in, be cool with that as well and move on to SIMUW or other summer experience. But obsessing about whether you're the right urm to get in or whether someone wasted time writing a rec letter for you to get into CalTech seems "mentally unhealthy."

Forgive me for my lack of understanding of human emotions, but I thought that thinking that I would be rejected would sound a bit... humble and knowledgable about my limits, rather than pretentious in applying to all of these reach programs. Though applying to all of these programs for the sake of applying isn't very healthy, at least I can reflect on the practice I've gotten from applying. And it is imortant for later apps because I can't ask my teachers for too much.

Congratulations QueenDee! Was there any interview process involved or is YESS based strictly on the application packet submitted? Did they give you any idea as to how many students applied this year?

No interview. I don't know how many applied but only 30 will be in the program. The letter did say that the number and quality of applicants this year far exceeded previous years.

None of my friend and teacher in school talked about the summer program in colleges.....I am glad I found this board and website, I believe all the deadlines for summer programs are all passed. I plan to go to Caltech in the future, and just found out the YESS program. Next year, as a junior, I'll try to apply to YESS since I live in Hacienda Heights. Nice to meet you all, I've got a lot of informations in here!

Is prestige quantifiable? All I can say is that it does help getting into Caltech. And it probably helps your chances with other schools too. The YESS staff will go the extra mile and then some to write recommendations for you.

RSI (MIT or Caltech) > SSP ~=~ NASASharp > YESS, in terms of academic prestige.

There is already a Caltech version of RSI (called RSI), which was on hiatus for a year but will probably be coming back next year.

YESS is an exact analogue of MITES, MIT's minority program. Neither program is academically all that impressive, but both are excellent for exposing people to advanced math/science.
