CAL Transfer student graduation limit?

I heard that you must finish your undergraduate at Cal in two year (ie 4 semester),
with the option of summer courses.

My situation is that

I am planning to double major in Econ and Poli Sci,
which means i will need 16 class and a grand total of 64 to
fulfill the major requirements of both departments

I just secured a summer job in a political party, which I will be working under
some big name legislator in my home country. Hopefully I will be working there
each summer during my studies at CAL.

Does that mean I will have to take 5 classes per semester? Oh ****…

bumpbumpbump

bumpbumpbump

part of double-majoring requires you to do more work. so yes, you have to take 5 classes per semester…maybe even more.

Just called the Poli Sci department, they said as long as
I don’t go over the 136 units cap,
I can do 5 semester,
problem solved!

are you going to declare first semester jr year? or can you declare 1st semester sr year? since you only have to do it 1 semester before you graduate. and since it’s a double major, so its just adding on.

forcedtobefree,
- Do you know which UC’s don’t have a graduation unit limt?

durainontop:

Some capped major will require you to declare it right away,
(in my case, Economics)
that means you will have to declare it at the beginning of your
first semester at CAL.

Then for the other major which is not capped
(ie, Poli Sci), you will have (or be able) to declare it at the beginning of your
second semester, since they will need to see your GPA before they let
you do double major.

You will also need to complete the prereq before declaring

btw, what are you majoring in?

There is no “2 year” cap. Cal really hopes you’ll graduate in 2 years, though, so there is a unit cap, although this is sort of confusing, too. If you are double majoring, you are capped at 136 units. However, if you have 135 (or maybe 135.5?) units before the end of your “final” semester, you can still register for a full load the next semester. Single majors get 120 units - 119 will allow you to register for a full load the following semester. I believe you can also appeal if you are at 136 or 120 (or just above) and still need a class to graduate, although it might be difficult.

Also, I remember hearing that transfer students get 6 semesters of financial aid, so unless you can pay for it out of pocket, there is a sort of 3 year cap.

This reminds me that I need to meet with an L&S adviser about a possible 5th semester abroad…

forcedtobefree: “You can always declare a single major first, then the double major when the second can be declared.” [Choosing a Major-Defining Major](http://ls-major.berkeley.edu/definition.html)
i’m majoring in poli sci and econ as well : )
i got admitted to poli sci but i want to double in econ too.
my first semester ill declare poli sci so im not blocked for registration
i have all my prereqs done for p.s. but i dont for econ. i still need calc i and ii. so i am going to take calc1 this summer. then next summer ill take calc. ii then declare econ in the fall so then ill have the prereqs done.

durianontop:

But I think you will have to declare econ first…

I don’t think you can declare it once you have done your first semester…

where are you transferring from?

P.s. Most Transfer student who want to declare econ major need
to take one stat class and one upper division econ class during their
first semester at berkeley, you can visit their econ faculty website for more details…

i dont think you have to do it first semester because i remember reading on the website that you have to declare
that same site… where it says “how do i declare double major” it says the application must be submitted 1 full semester prior to graduation. so im assuming that means you dont have to declare your first semester
the first semester thing is for single majors
im pretty sure of this
because if you have a single major they require you to declare once you get to cal, whatever major that is, but if you decide to do a double, they also give you an extra semester to complete… so it doesnt have to be 1st semester to declare both majors.

The unit cap is confusing. Do you have to take 13 units per semester?

I wanted to take 13 every semester without summer courses, which means during my fifth (and final semester) I can only enroll in 8 units without going over the 130 unit cap. Is it possible I could enroll in 5 extra units my fifth semester to total 13 units, which would give me 135 units total? (I have one major).

capped majors have to be declared when you have 80 units (completed and in progress). so yes, econ should be declared in your first semester.

iambeowulf, can you answer my question? See my post above yours. ^^

what i was told was that you get 5 semesters no matter what if you’re double majoring. they didn’t mention a unit cap.

this topic really confused me too. i read on the L&S page that single majors get 4 semesters with summers and double majors get 5 with summers…and the unit caps mentioned above. BUT…then i read that as long as you stay within the semester limit, there is no unit cap. then i got really confused because i spoke with a lady at the TRSP office and she told me that i will not be restricted to 4 semesters (as a single major).

so now i’m just pretty confused. i’m hoping to get some clarification at Calso. Sorry if this was completely useless…=D

From Cal Website (http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/collegepolicies/unit.html):

130-Unit Maximum after Eight Semesters

If you stay in college more than eight semesters*, you may not continue beyond the semester in which you complete more than 130 units

*four semesters for transfers

So yeah, on your last semester, in order to fill up the minimum full-time units, you are allowed to take more units that will surpass the 130 units max. However, that will be your last semester at Cal. This also applies for double-majors, but on the fifth semester + slightly increased total max units allowed (someone said 136?). Berkeley goes by a “whichever comes first” condition so as to discourage people from sticking around campus for too long just to get a double major. Hope this helps.

Thank you SO MUCH Dango!! (:
