Cal transfer

im applying this coming fall as a junior transfer. (right now im a freshmen in my spring semester).

Question 1
Is it true that my freshmen fall (3.8) and spring semester (3.77 <---assuming) gpa are the only ones theyre going to look at?
will my sophmore fall grades be part of my app?

Question 2
Is it better to finish the igetc or major prereq first? So far, i completed English 1 (A) and 15 (assuming a B, lucky if i get an A) for my english major. I need to take English 2 and 5 which are the prereqs i havent completed yet, and Im planning to do it during the summer semester.

When you first fill out the application (November?) you enter your freshman grades. Then you add an update in January with your Fall grades. When decisions come out, acceptances will come with terms and conditions related to your planned coursework for Spring.

Dunno, doubt it matters much.

is my gpa for an english major good enough if i maintain above 3.7?

major pre reqs are number 1 on your list. if you don’t have pre reqs. you’re application is thrown out

I believe Cal is the only school that ABSOLUTELY REQUIRES that you finish your IGETC. Try to maintain your GPA around 3.8. I was just at Cal today as part of their transfer weekend program and apparently they are ranked #1 in English, so try to keep your GPA high and finish all your pre-reqs by fall of your soph year.

kay: As a general rule, Cal doesn’t require IGETC… I transferred in as EECS, and they specifically suggest not following IGETC. That might just be for CoE, but Cal admissions overall certainly don’t require IGETC.

GPA: Keep it as high as you can, but remember that Cal admissions are always a mystery. People get rejected with 4.0’s, people get in with a 3.5. Having a high GPA certainly helps, but there’s a lot of factors for admission.

Good luck!

@Failure
College of L/S as does REQUIRE IGETC completion. Your major is different because you are in College of Engineering :). Engineering is a high unit major and more focused, so IGETC is not required.

Check the box. It does not have to be IGETC, I suppose, but IGETC is the most convenient way fo complete GEs.

For Berkeley L&S you have the option of completing a 7 course breadth, so no IGETC isn’t the only option. It’s also less courses than IGETC which is usually around 10+. Just as a general rule of thumb, when applying to any of the UC’s I would prioritize major pre-reqs over GE requirements. Both are important, but it’s probably better to get your major pre-reqs out of the way first so that your grades for them aren’t pending in spring quarter. If you can demonstrate that you’ve completed all of major pre-reqs and you do well in them you can imagine that would make you more competitive as an applicant than if you finished your unrelated GE requirements early.
