I live in an apartment 5 blocks from campus on the south side. with 5 other people. It's looking like none of them are going to renew their lease for Fall14, so I'll either have to find replacements or get another place. I've been browsing a bit and everything looks so expensive. My rent at the moment is $625.

-Where do YOU live?
-Is it a nice place, good management?
-How much is rent?

EDIT: Anyone who doesn't live at the dorms can reply, I just assumed most underclassmen live at the dorms

Are you looking for a place for just yourself? Because if you want to live alone there’s no chance you’re going to find a place for that price.

I live in one of the nicer buildings in Berkeley on Haste and Shattuck (still not that great) and my rent is about 2100. I wanted a “cleaner” building and that is the cheapest I could find close to campus (other places that I didn’t like were still $1300-2000 and some were too far).

I live on Bancroft/Telegraph. Since it is right next to campus, my roommate and I pay for a $1344 studio (so $672 each…no bedrooms…just a living room). The kitchen is super huge, and the bathroom is super huge so that is nice.new people moving in have to pay $1500 for the same studio. Management is not bad, but could be better…However, it is super convenient to go to class :)

Interested in this thread. My freshman kid wants to get out of the dorms this fall when he’s a sophmore. I don’t think the dorms have been bad at all, but he’s ready to spread his wings a bit. Figure we’re paying about $1235/mo. for the room plus bonus meal plan (triple room). Wherever he moves would likely be cheaper, but have to consider all costs: meals, rent, utilities, internet, etc.

After living 3 places in the past 4 years, all I can say is this: LOCATION.

Rent rate and other living costs certainly do matter, but it starts with location and ends with location.
