Cal vs. Duke

I would have chosen Cal until I heard about it's 'engineering trap'. Computer Engineering isn't really my top choice. Honestly, I'm still an undecided. I'm the type who needs to browse and sample things around before settling for one thing, which sounds as though it's almost impossible with Cal.

But I'm not really sure about Duke either. I've been to the Cal campus and I like the environment there so far as I've seen. It might seem rather unfair, but I've hardly even heard of Duke. I'm an international, so it might have something to do with that as well.

I've also been waitlisted at Columbia and Brown so that's another thing to consider. So confused! Help, please :)

The right college for you would be Letters and Sciences - no matter how you apply, you enter as undecided and sample, declaring you major typically after two years. If you were accepted into College of Engineering, transfer to L&S is not that hard.

Just make sure you do it quickly, and especially before any bad final grades are assigned. It is those engineering students who have bad grades on their transcripts who find themselves trapped. Those with good grades will be able to freely to switch out of engineering, but therein lies the paradox: it is those students with bad grades who need to switch out the most, but they’re also precisely the ones who are being forced to stay.
